I have just spoken to a friend who asked me as I have a bit more choice this time whether I will request the umbilical cord to be put into string ties (sterile of course), as it is more comfortable (supposedly) for the newborn. I am now totally thrown there is too much choice now!

I think it is something you have to specifically ask for.

My mw asked me this question when i was pg with ds1.

She was what i refered to her as a 'new age' mw, as she was completley barking, she wanted to do every 'different' thing in labour, which i was having none of as it was my first go and i was scared.

She mentioned something about umbilical cotton tape? if i remember rightly she said it was just like cotton but alittle thicker and it saves the plastic clamp from irritating and scratching the new baby's belly.

Mention it to your mw and see what she's say's, it does exsist so im sure if you chose this option it would be available to you
