Please have a think before reading on please.
A 5 month old baby has been mauled and killed by 2 Rotweillers in Leicester. She was in her pram outside a pub her parents were looking after when her mum went out to check on her. She saw 1 of the dogs jumping up on to the roof with her baby in its mouth and then the second dog joined in the attack there.
The 2 dogs have now been put down and the police are in disscusions about if Rotweillers should be put on the dangerous dogs list.

i heard about this too yesterday, its awful.
i think rotties have gotten a bad name from the terrible people that use them for their size and rough look, they arent all man eaters and vicious. i wonder if these dogs were known to be agressive and wether they should have been near the child in the 1st place. the poor family must be devestated my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Up until recently Dp and I assumed our Rotties were classed as dangerous dogs! We use the guidelines for dangerous dogs but it actually only applies to fighting dogs ie Pitbull terriers.
We have done and always will take any large dog out with a muzzle on, our garden has been made totally secure and we have a bout 5/6 rottweiler lives here signs.
But ANY dog can turn nasty. A child was attacked round here a while ago by a Labrodor(sp?) and a Jack russel.
My heart goes out to the family involved and am relieved that those 2 dogs have actually been destroyed.

This is an auful story!!! I grew up with an Alsatian crossed Rhodiesian Ridgeback and he was absolutly huge, but was as soft as melted butter, although he was used as a Security dog with my Dad on night shifts with him. My parents were always weary of him turning vicious and he did on occasion turn to bite, but never, ever did. He was put down a few months ago at the age of 18 years old (in human years) due to his back legs giving way and old age.
I myself have Never had a dog in my house as i have seen some auful things happen to people in my area getting bitten by their family, trusted dogs. I cant even begin to imagine what the parents of the little baby must be going through, and how traumatic it must have been to witness this. I really feel for them and the baby to have had to go through this. All our thoughts and prayers are with all the baby's family. x-x-x

i agree that ANY dog can turn in an instant,we have just bought a labrador puppy who will be coming home in two weeks and i will forever be watching over her and bronia wen they are together even though they are said to be placid loving dogs.
no matter how much you trust and love any animal you have to remember thats what they are, animals.
people who use their dogs to look tough or scare people (obviously guard dogs are diff) deserve to be put down as much as the animal does as they are the ones putting peoples lives at risk.

I thought the same, that rotties, german shepherds, pitbulls etc were all classed in the 'dangerous dogs' list. I remember when the law first came out in the very early 90s, they were on it then, so they must have changed it.
Ive got a shepherd, he is a softie, but very protective over the children. It is clearly marked at the front door that he lives here, the back garden is very secure..however if he put his mind to it, he could scale the fence, but hes never tried it so far. The kids are never left alone with him, as all dogs have the ability to turn. Ive always said, the first bite..and its off to the vets. Jerry-Lee is registered on the GSD register, tattoood and chipped. Also because we are military he is registered with the MOD Police on camp, but that applies to all dogs that are from a forces family.

I was attacked by a big mongrel mutt while doing a paper round at aged 14. The policeman told me if it had got me on the floor and started on me I wouldn't be here today. It bit my thigh, but I managed to struggle and cycled off as fast as my little legs could carry me. From that day on I have always been weary of any dog. I wouldn't trust any dog alone with a child ever, due to my experience.
That poor baby didn't stand a chance and where were the parents?. Thank goodness the beasts were put down. It was shame a baby had to die before they were though. My thoughts are with the family.

This is terrible!
I do worry about this as Edward loves dogs and will happily run over to any dog and give it a stroke and a pat. I dont want him to be scared of dogs so I dont want to over react but its difficult. If we are out walking and a lively/large dog is coming towards us, even on a lead, I always turn to buggy away as if the dog jumped at Eddie he'd have no chance being strapped in.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family but I do agree that leaving the baby unattended was not a sensible move.
