From what I've read in the news the parents of the baby were working in the pub (the grandparents were the landlords and on holiday), and the baby was upstairs sleeping. The dogs were tied up on the roof and broke free and went straight for the baby. Dont know how much of this is correct but it is still awful it had to happen. Hopefully it will make all dog owners and people aware that there is always a possible risk.

I must admit I read about this yesterday. It's so horrific and so sad.

As has already been said any dog can turn at any point. Charlie (our Lab) is brilliant with Cerys I can't fault him at all but I will still never leave them in the room alone together.

I know of two rotties that are walked where I walk Charlie and they are brilliant, often stop and chat to the owner and the rotties and Charlie play for a bit. It depends on how you train them. He is so strict with them but they are also part of his family and not guard dogs. If they were trained as guard dogs then they would be potentially lethal, which looks like what happened in this case.

I have also been told by a Rottie owner as well that one of the main problems with them is that during the hot weather their brains swell up and so that can be when problems occur, esp if not trained properly.

I'm def trying to teach Cerys even at this young age that as much as she plays with Charlie (she even throws his ball for him in the garden and asks him to drop it LOL) she has to have respect for all dogs.

This is an awful story, and no matter where your looking from all you can do is pray the family can stay together after such an incident.  However I am one of those that think if an animal has bitten someone once, they should not be put anywhere near people, never mind babies!  One of the main reasons I will not let dh bring the dogs into the house!

My thoughts are with the family but why on earth would you ever leave a child or baby unattended.

I would never leave ellen alone even with a so called friendly dog as its not worth the risk.

My dogs stay outside most of the day and generally come in when Adam is in bed. They prefer to be outside! But would never ever let them be on there own with Adi, he can be a nasty when he wants to be and I dont want to let anything happen through carelessness.
