Hi ladies,

my lo is 5wks old tomorrow and over the last week has come out in a really bad rash and little spots have appeared all over his face, scalp, neck and ears. They are the same colour as his skin and look like they are getting worse. To be honest they look like he's fallen in a bunch of nettles, they aren't just little bumps.

We went to visit my mum this weekend and she said that it is normal, just milk spots that all babies get but they look worse today and I'm getting worried because he hasnt slept as good as usual this weekend and has been crying more. He feels hot but hasnt got a temp. I thought it was cause we were in a differnt house and he wasnt used to it so wanted to look around and be nosey (just like his mum!!!!)

Another friend of mine said it could be teething. He looks like he has teeth already i.e. you can see the shape of them through his gums... Please tell me this cant be happening already, I'm breast feeding and dont think I could continue if he started to cut teeth. He already bites down on my nipples sometimes, and it bloody hurts without teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks from a worried first time mum, Rachel and baby Nathaniel xXx

Jack only had 2 hun.  One on his nose and one on his cheek.  His were white tho and looked like drops of milk - hence the name 'Milk Spots'.

And the teeth could come through lol Rachel and Jack were both very young with their first tooth coming through but the rest of them took ages lol.

His 2 disappered after about 3 weeks.  If they seem to be bothering him try a little E45 rubbed on and speak to your HV or DR.

Love Trudi.  x

Thomas had milk spots all over his wee face when he was about 3
weeks. The HV said is was basically caused by milk dribbling onto his
face whilst feeding.
The HV recommended i see the doc to get a prescription - I got
aqueous cream which worked a treat.

Sounds like he's got either milk spots or heat rash!  If you say he was feeling warm although he didn't have a temp, I would try stripping him down for a couple of hours to just a nappy, and see if that makes it better or not.  I know there's nothing you can do about heat rash, but when Fred was little he suffered from heat rash quite bad, and it looked alot worse than it actually was.  Hope he gets a tooth through pretty quick as I hate the teething time!

Liam had teeth shapes from day one but no teeth as of yet but he is teething now at 4 months, so i personally think its because lo's are so small and their gums are still developing so you can see teeth shapes. Try not to worry too much unless your lo gets a temoerature or starts vomiting badly.

Milk spots are usually white, ryan had them all over his nose wen he was tiny & looked like he had terrible acne lol

Could it be excema? Ryans excema appeared from nowhere at about 10 weeks old & that can look like heat rash

if ur worried take him to the docs or hv for some reassurance

Some babies get a rash just from the environment, 2 of mine did and it's quite harmless.  It's almost like the world is a bit of a shock to their delicate skin, it should go in a couple of days.  If you are worried it's always better to follow your instincts though and go and see your gp or hv.  Don't worry about teething and breastfeeding there are techniques you can use to discourage biting.  Ollie has a full set of teeth and I am still breastfeeding he has only drawn blood twice....

My DD had a rash that sounds v similar to Nathanials. It scared the pants off me I can tell you! I took her to the doctors, they had no idea, so I had to keep an eye on her and take her back in 3 days, which I did - and they still didn't know!

It lasted a few weeks, and then went!

Hope it clears up soon. Take care xxx

Hi everyone, and thank you for all your advice yesterday. I rang the hv office yesterday and she came round this afternoon. She said that it is most likely to be milk spots. Apparantly some babies get it worse than others but hopefully it should go in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed xxxxx

On the other subject of teething, the HV doesnt know if he is teething cause their teeth can come down many months before they actually break through. Again I hope this is the case cause I dont really want to be BF Nathaniel with a full set of teeth!!!!! LOL !!!!! I would be interested to know any techniques to use when BF a baby with teeth to stop them from biting your nipples off !!!!!

Many thanks, Rachel & baby Nathaniel

Hi,congratulations .I had my daughter Mirren 5 weeks ago and she has exactly the same problem.I was really worried when they first appeared,I even phoned the midwife at my maternity hospital but I've been reasured they are perfectly normal.I think when you are a first time mum you start to panic about everything and you want it all to be perfect but even our cherubs have thier little flaws.I think you have to learn abot these things as you go along no matter how many books you've read.take care and enjoy being a mum.
