Hi Ladies,

As some of you will already know from previous postings that my LO is only 5wks old and may be starting to teeth already. I have heard that there are some techniques you can use to stop babies from biting your nipples off LOL.... Would be really grateful if you could send me some if you are aware of any, no teeth have come through yet but I would like to be prepared for when they do!!!!!!!

I breast fed both of mine until they had loads of teeth and only had a
biting problem a couple of times. (More of a nip then a bite tbh!)

If they bite, use your pinky to pop into the side of their mouth to break
the suction and take them off the breast right away. If they do it again
do the same thing until they get the message.

I'll write a wee artice to cover this more fully and pop it up on here.

Hi,  I breastfed my daughter until she was 3yrs old and I am still breastfeeding my 19mnth old son.  With my daughter she never thought about biting me once but my son has bitten me a few times and drawn blood.  A few things I noticed with my son to combat the biting was, to only feed him when he was hungry when he was just after a comfort feed he would mess about and sometimes bite but he never did when he was very hungry.  Also hold baby close so that they have a good suckle and don't have room to pull back and bite.  Another time that my son will bite is if he falls asleep feeding which he doesn't do very often now but if he does his jaw clamps shut.  Just notice when your baby might go to bite and then make sure you don't do that situation again. hth

Thanks for your advice I'll definitley remember that one and I look forward to reading your article Lynie...

And congratulations on breast feeding for so long mumsam, I would like to continue to breast feed until my LO is at least 6mth old but the more I read about the benefits for both myself and my LO I would like to do it for longer. The only thing is I will be going back to work when Nathaniel is 6mths old  so wont be able to continue with demand feeding. Although I suppose he should be in a routine with his feeding then hopefully I can express the feeds he needs for when I'm not around. Anyway I dont want to think about going back to work yet it just gets me upset...

The article is now in the breastfeeding forum. Sorry, my hyperlink
facility isnt working for me!

Edit by Diz - Lynie's artice is HERE

I breastfed my two, even when I was back at work. You are entitled to
have breaks and demand suitable facilities for expressing, over and
above your normal breaks at work. (Cue for another article!)

I work full time and still breastfeed.  I went back to work when Ollie was 6mnths old and I did find it heart breaking to leave him but in time I got used to it.  I am lucky that I work not too far from home so can come home at lunch times to feed him.  He feeds more at the weekends than he does during the week and my milk supply copes fine.  Good luck.

Thanks again for your replies, I'm so glad I posted this question I think the advice I have been given will be useful for lots of new mums who use this site. I never would have known your entitled to extra breaks and somewhere comfortable to express. I bet employers dont always inform women going back to work of this right either... After reading about your experiences/advice I am more determined to try and BF when I return to work...

I bf my son until he was 11 months. He never bit me hard but we had a few nips. I just pulled him gently off and told him No and left him a while. He realised he didnt get fed if he bit and that was much more important to him.

He started teething at 10 weeks but didnt actually cut a tooth until 6 months so dont panic yet!

I agree with all Sams advice too. They are more likely to bite when not really hungry as they then arent attached properly. I seem to remember having a few chats with sam about this at the time as we both had the same problem.

Good luck in bfing. It sounds like you are doing really well and it is so rewarding! I only stopped at 11 months as my son self weaned.
