Fred has always been a constipated child, even having fruit by the tonne, and plenty of pure juice, he would sit and 'strain' for hours before managing even the slightest of marbles, bless him.  On the advice of the hv I went to see my gp, who said tihs is very common in toddlers, usually though it's during potty training.  He has given Fred a medicine that taken in 2.5ml twice a day, has eased his problems no end.  It's the stuff they can give out at almost any age (even up to being an old fogey).  It's not a drug as such, it's a lubricant for your insides.  There is so much you can't give children and if they are under 5 you can't really give them any over the counter medication.  This has got to be prescribed, and I have to admit it is fantastic.  Although the idea of changing a dirty nappy first thing in the morning is not a pleasant thought, I was delighted when Fred had filled his nappy.  He sat straining all day yesterday and nothing.  So although I have to keep him on it indefinitely for now, I thought some of you others may want to know about it as it has really helped Fred.  He no longer goes to hide in the corner when filling his nappy.  I have tried not giving him it every time, but that has not helped, so I'd rather give him the medicine every day knowing he's not going to be in pain when he goes to the toilet.  We are hoping he outgrows this once we do train him.

Ds has been prescribed something like you describe and used to have it everyday and eventually he has come off it and no problems, i know how many problems it can have being constipated as ds has ended up in a+e 3 times with this problem before being referred to the bowel specialist who gave us this medicine, i have been told that occurs more in boys than it does in girls and as dd doesn't have any problems like ds did they may be right.

It's horrid to see them so uncomfortable and straining every time, hopefully this should make a big difference to him.

2 of mine have had this problem. The oldest one seems to get it in phases (mostly when he doesn't drink enough at school, I'm certain), but he has to be practically force fed fruit and veg in large quantities to keep him regular. My youngest has always had this problem, even as a tiny baby. When I started to wean him, everything was mixed with prune juice! He was prescribed Movicol, which we had managed to get him off until we started to potty train him when he had to go back on it, and we haven't got him off it again yet. I do think this is a laxative though, what's the name of the stuff you have?

Mine is 'lactulose solution'.  And yes Steph I was in stitches as mom said it's exactly like oil in a car engine, just helps keep things going! lol  Ds1 had a suppository when he was potty training, and I swore no other child I had would have to go through that again!  So far I'm not worried about Winston, he is totally the opposite and has been since birth!

Oh our dd has this problem too, although I dont think its constipation as such she just does to bigger poo for her size bum, sorry tmi.

She too is on lactulose, 20ml a day which is about the right dose for her as anything smaller doesnt "oil her" enough!!!!!!!!

She is going back to dr this week after a month on this stuff and i suspect he will keep her on it.  It is awful seeing them strain so much it sometimes makes her cry which is upsetting. Poor little sausage.

Good luck with the nappy filling xx
