Wow what a title! lol  My poor little Fred has this.  And thought I'd put a small post about it.  I noticed a couple of weeks ago when I changed Fred's nappy that the base of his penis looked slightly bruised, but it seemed to clear, and I never thought anything of it.  I asked dh, and he was useless, just leave it alone it will be fine was his reply.  I also asked my boys, being sensible, they said it was perfectly normal every so often, so I'd checked it out as best as I could!  He's not liked having his nappy changed for a few days, and when I opened his nappy this morning, his penis was swollen and extremely red/bruised looking.  So I decided to take him into the doctor, just to make sure, and in slightly moving the end of his penis a load of pus came out.  So the doctor has taken a swab and prescribed some anti biotic cream for me to apply 3 times a day.  He has also advised me to give him plenty of cranberry juice, as this can head off a urine infection.  I have to get a urine sample when the infection has cleared, for the doctor to make sure there is no infection in the bladder.  There is no point in getting a sample until after the infection clears as all this will do is show that the infection is in the bladder!  Now, us women are used to getting the odd infection etc but in boys it's not a common ailment, and the reason (according to the doc) is that boys have about 10 inches from the tip of their penis to the bladder.  So if it turns out that he does have a bladder infection, I am going to have to take him to the hospital for tests, as there could be an underlying cause.  Other advice he gave me was to leave him nappy free as often as possible (in my house that is inviting infection) and bath him at least once daily, as this will ease the discomfort!  Poor little man, no wonder he's been such a whinge for the last few days!

The reason for this thread was for those mothers like me that just think things will pass without a worry, keep an eye out, and if you are not 100% sure (especially when it comes to boys bits) then get him checked out, as I can't begin to imagine the pain he must be going through.  No wonder he has been waking up screaming in the night, and sleeping with his bum in the air!

Awww Fred!! Sending massive hugs (leaning forward to aviod the sore lower area) from Me & Ella!

Ethan (eldest neph) had an infection on his once, it was soooo sore bless him. It must really really hurt. Its quite a difficult area to clean when they're that size I would think.

Hope the anti biotics work soon and Fred gets better soon!

Vix, Im glad you posted this.

Harrison has had a few times over the last year a very red, almost swollen looking tip, and he said it was sore, but it soon cleared up after a day or two.

I haven't a clue what a normal boys bit looks like and if its ment to change with regards to infections and red bits. God that sounds dumb I know but at his age, he's forever messing with it so i never know if its down to that

Next time it looks like that I'll take him to the gp!

No Zoe he didn't tell me how he can get trhem, and seeing as though he doesn't get much nappy free time here then I'm puzzled, however on the plus side, although it's still a nasty red, it's definitely not as swollen mtoday!

Glad I could help Rin, that was the main reason I put it here, as I still having had 4 boys don't know what's normal and not!

Well his little 'tail' looks like it's back to normal, but I will keep up with the cream for a few more days, just to make sure, and he's not as whingy as he was.  Still prefers me to change his nappy, but I don't mind, he actually let one of the older ones take him to bed last night!

Glad he's on the mend!

I seem to recall (3smallboys - correct me if I'm wrong!) that the infection can occure due to bacteria build up in the folds of skin. As it spends most of its time in a nappy where its warm and damp, its the ideal breeding ground for bugs. All it needs is one wayward bug from an inquisitive hand lol!

Really glad things are getting back to normal in that area for him. Poor thing!

Aww poor Fred! Liam's looks swollen at the base occasionally, and we did have this problem of him not weeing for half a day! this will sound really odd, but at his age is the foreskin supposed to roll back or not? Its just his seems really tight and am thinking it might cause a problem!  Hope Fred feels better soon! xxxxxx
