I dont know about you but when I go and see my GP I often come out with a prescription and a rough idea of what is wrong with me but not much more than that. Even with my SPD I found out almost everything I know of the internet!

Now I am seeing my chiropractor I feel so much more in the know. Although I see her about my SPD I can ask her about anything, even really embarressing questions about periods, weeing and depression and really easy to talk about. When I ask her she doesnt fob me off, we sit and talk and she explains everything. She has as much, if not more knowledge than any gp I have ever met. She will recommend herbal remedies, all of which seem to work.

When I went to see her yesterday I wasnt happy. I couldnt get in to see my gp yet I was really worried, partly due to my horrible period, my increased pain in my groin, and also I had been very tired and breathless.

She explained I am prone to extra release of certain hormones, which is why the SPD became a problem. When you have a period you release extra ProstaglandinGE2. I release around 4 times too much and because it will go straight to the sourse of any infalmation and cause extra pain - obviously I will end up with much more pain. Add to that the fact that because of the depo I havent had a period in 6 months it has become like a pressure cooker, my body is confused by what is now happening. This is also the reason for my breathlessness - low iron levels. I am anemic because my body isnt used to losing blood.

Now if I had seen my gp I would know this in anywhere near as much detail! Alison has prescribed herbal iron supplements, herbal mood supplements for PMT and is going to work with me in the week leading up to my next period. I am also doing a food diary and we will change my eating in the week before my period to lessen the pains.

I feel so much better than I ever do after seeing a doctor! (Although at £30 a session maybe I should!)

I think your post is quite a sad reflection on our NHS system

So we have to pay now to get the answers we need?

I am glad that you are getting somewhere with all this and that someone is able to explain it in a way you can understand

I must be one of the lucky ones!  My doc's (either of them as there are 2 in the practice and they are both as good as each other) have a tendancy to tell me what things are why thye are happening, which is why when I wasn't at all sure about what was happening with Winston I phoned my gp.  If I want to be told delicately I will speak to one, if I need straight forward honesty I go to the other!  However the delicate one can be brutal sometimes! lol

At least you are finding things out Madz, it is sad that people have to pay to get told what they should be, but nhs doctors are quite often so busy treating everyone they forget their bedside manner!  Some people need explanations, others would prefer to just get a prescription and leave!
