Cast Notes: Before Al Pacino signed on, Harrison Ford was considering the starring role originally played by Stellan Skarsgard (whom, in my opinion, Ford vaguely resembles). Ford decided to star in K-19 instead.
Director Notes: At one time, Jonathan Demme was in talks to direct, but he will be working on The Truth About Charlie this spring instead.
Screenwriter:Hillary Seitz (her debut, Early Bird Special from 1998, is looking for distribution)
Based Upon: This is the English-language remake of the 1997 Norwegian film, Insomnia, starring Stellan Skarsgard. The title comes from the time of the year in which the film is set, when Alaska (and Norway) becomes the "land of the midnight sun"... hence, insomnia could be a common problem.
Not Based Upon: This movie doesn't have anything to do with the bestselling novel of the same title by Stephen King.
Premise: Sent from the city to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in a small Alaska town, a police detective (Pacino) accidentally shoots his own partner (Donovan) while trying to apprehend a suspect (Williams). Instead of admitting his guilt, the detective is given an unexpected alibi, but this "solution" only multiplies the emotional complexity and guilt over his partner's death. He's also still got a murder mystery to solve, in addition to the blackmail and framing (of an innocent bystander) being orchestrated by the man they were chasing. There's also a local detective (Swank) who is conducting her own personal investigation.. of his partner's death. Will it all come crashing down on him? (Tierney plays Pacino's "romantic interest", though the first film didn't have a traditional "love" angle... she might be playing a local woman the cop bonds with)
Filming: Production started on April 16th, 2001 in Vancouver, Canada, subbing for a small Alaska town, on a budget of nearly $50 million, and wrapped in late June, 2001.
