Could be colic.
Thomas had it and it was very very hard. I used to give him infacol
before a BF but sometimes it didn't work. I remember one day he cried
for 6 hours solid.
He also went through a growth spurt at about 11/12 weeks when he fed
constantly all day. I called Lynie because i had no idea why he wanted
to feed so often and i was exhausted. He literally fed all day and then
next he was back to his usual routine.

If i were you i would try to hold off on the weaning but as everyone has
said, you know your baby best so go with your own instincts.

If he was only screaming at night then I would have said that it was colic, but seeing as though he is a big boy, you have to follow your instincts.

As far as weaning him, just follow his lead.  Fred screamed from about 3 weeks old, and the hv kept telling me it was wind, well he had every treatment for wind (I even combined a couple) that I knew about, and would gulp a full bottle of 8oz every 2 hours, my mom was told when she had me and my sisters, that you wean them at 12lbs or 3 months whichever comes first, I started Fred at 6 weeks, and I never looked back!  Yes he was a big baby, he was on the 98th centile or above for most of it, but he has now come backdown to the 75th.  The clothes I was buying for last winter (aged 18-24 months) still fit him now, because he has now slimmed down alot.  Give him a few nights of the rusk at night time before you expect his daytime crying to stop, and then see if maybe he wants something first thing in a morning.  I found that Fred would sleep through at 4 weeks, but he would spend the entire day screaming and guzzling, so when I started a solid feed it was the first of the day, and after a week, the screaming settled down too.  He also ended up on 3 feeds a day before some of the 05 babies even had 1 feed!  Just follow your instincts, and if the hv shouts at you ignore her, after all, it's your baby, not hers!  And she doesn't have to deal with a screaming baby continuously you do.  My hv told me that she would advise me along the guidelines that they have to follow, but if I find it doesn't work, and so long as the baby is happy she's not going to worry about the 'wrong' things that I do! lol  As she put it, she only see the baby every so often, how would she know what would work!  Good luck hun, but if it gave you even just the one night of peace it was definitely worth it.
