I have been changing contraception for ages in the hope of finding one which works ok for me. I am currently using Yasmin (oral pill) and have just finished packet 2. I bled normally after packet one, then a week later had an odd bleed again for a few days then finished packet 2 and have a bleed. This bleed is really odd though, its much lighter than normal and is really dark, its hard to explain but it isnt like fresh blood (sorry tmi). Its manky!

On top of that my boobs have been really weird and swollen and the other evening I was playing with Eddie and my boobs leaked! (I stopped bfing 9 months ago!) I have put on weight and feel miserable. I'm seeing my gp tomorrow but I'm running out of options.

Hey

I do remember when i was coming off the depo, for the first day or so whilst i was on i had a manky bleed, like a really deep red/brown.

I also had one of these whilst i was pg with one i m/c... it was the first period whilst being pg iygwim.

Anyhows, hope you get your answers from the doc, its such a pain when you don know what your body is playing at

When you go on the pill, you do get a much lighter bleed and with some it can actually stop you bleeding.  Most pills make you put on weight!  And the dark bloodis actually stale blood, which has taken longer to travel out of your system!  Hope this helps.  Not sure about the leaking boobs, but then my boobs always leaked even on the depo, so maybe that's another side effect!

I hated putting on the weight, but I'm not sure what else to suggest!  Hope you manage to get it sorted soon Madz!

Hey mate...the darker the colour..the slower your flow in a nutshell.  A breakthru bleed isnt uncommon when starting a new type pill..just takes a bit of time to your body to adjust to the pill your taking.  The boob thing is a side effect of the pill..might be worth having a chat with the doc about it when you go in the morning

Brown blood or "manky" blood usually means that it's older blood that has lost it's hemoglobin so been in the body longer.  It's nothing to worry about.  It's quite normal to have odd periods on the pill it's because it's not a normal period where you release an egg and then about 14 days later have a period, instead it's a hormonal withdrawal bleed (hence why it's called a withdrawal bleed not a period by professionals).  Periods can be much lighter or non existant.  Break through bleeding and breast tenderness can also be very normal on the pill.  It can take a few months at least 3-6mnths for your body to get used to the new contraception and settle back down.  Plus you are still coming off the depo and some people have reported side affects to it for up to 18mnths after stopping it.  Unfortunately another side affect of the pill is weight gain normally caused by water retention, try drinking plenty of water to flush your body out and take some light exercise just a walk around the block will do when you feel up to it.
