Bought Max a personal stereo from ELC a couple of months ago and didn't bother checking it as it was all sealed up.

Anyway, the bloomin thing doesn't play, but chews up tapes instead.

Also, I've lost the receipt so what are my chances with exchanging it?

Awwwwwww i would give it i try hun.  If you still have the packaging i dont think it should be a problem.  If it is say it was i christmas present off someone else so you dont have the receipt.

ELC are normally very good and will exchange items that are defective, I have never had any problems with them at all.  Give it a shot, explain it was a pressie and what it's doing I am sure they will understand.

I'd have thought they would exchange it, I bought a paddling pool once but it kept going down, they swapped it straight away without a receipt, no questions asked.

Ethans had the sing-along cassette stereo thingy from Elc, he's not opened it yet, hope we don't have a similar problem with that.

No harm in trying them - Not everyone keeps receipts anyway and if you've got the original box and everything they should just exchange it for you. Hope you can get it done.
