Last night Joshua was up in the night being sick. He didnt really have too much of a temperature, but complained of a sore tummy so I gave him calpol incase he had tummy cramps. He woke up almost on the 4 hourly dot and I gave him more calpol then he went back off to sleep. He eventually woke up about 12 noon and seemed bright and cheerful.

He didnt have any lunch or snacks but has drunk plenrty of water, and his temperature has been averaging 37 all day, no sign of a cold or anything, but I have given him calpol this afternoon and just before bed at 6pm. he has been absolutely fine all afternoon no sick or moaning. Even had a bit of dinner.

About half an hour ago I went in his room to check on him and he was what I can only describe as fitting. I went over to him and he was roasting, the themometer was next to his bed and I took it and it was 39.6 I took off his bedding and stripped him to a vest before tepid sponging him. He seemed to stop the "fitting" within about 4 minutes of me finding him, not sure how long he was like it till I got to him. Ive given him calpol and now about 30 mins later his temperature is 38.9. He doesnt seem dazed, and he has had a drink now but is still complaining of a sore tummy. I know when the temp goes so high los can have convulsions so Im trying hard not to panic but he has never had one before.

Ive moved him into my room now so I can monitor him, but Im not sure if I should be doing anything else for him, ring NHS or something but Im not sure if they can do anything. he has stopped now and his temp is coming down slowly. Arghhh I hate it when my baby is poorly

You can give him children's Ibuprophen as well as Calpol to help with the temp- if he's no better call NHS direct.  It can be scary when they are like this, but prob he'll be fine soon-

Big hugs xxx

Chris, if he's had a fit - ring NHS to get it checked out, they may well want him looked at.

You're absolutely doing the right thing, but please do call them - their website says any fit you should call and tell the 1st person you speak to that he had one.

Let us know how you get on.

I only have medised and calpol in, and Joshua cant have medised it would make things worse. Joshua is just lying spaced out on my bed, if his temperature doesnt start to come down out of the 38's I'll give NHS a ring I think.

If he has had one fit he is more prone to having another one.  I would ring now either NHS direct or the out of hours doctor. In fact when Ollie was a baby and had a fit the doctor told me if it ever happened again to dial 999 and don't hesitate.

Just after posting that last post I saw diz's and rang the NHS. Whilst on the phone Joshua started fitting again and an ambulance was sent straight out to us. They have just left having checked him over and taken his temperature. They have left him here as his temperature was normal now and he wasnt fitting. They said the hospital would more than likely tell me to give him calpol and send us home, and if we went in by ambulance then we'd have to make arrangements to get home.

Anyway, they left him here but said if he looks unwell, fits or I am just not happy ring 999 dont bother with NHS direct and they will take him in straight away. He has settled and is fast asleep, in my room so I can keep am eye on him. He's had a drink before falling asleep and had calpol around 10pm. I'll make a GP appointment tomorrow, his belly is sore to touch and they think he might have an infection hence the temperature.

Hi Mummy,

First off, what other symptoms does he have...vomitting, headache, ear ache, throat pain, diarrhea..anyways, usually medication can decrease temperature but hide the real problem of a type of infection that is present and needs to be treated with antibiotics...the high temp is just one thing that you see first sign of infection. it may be a virus instead of a common cold...so let the docs check out maybe the ears or throat to make sure there is no infection/ If its tummy or gastral you may see vomitting or diarrhea and needs to be taken care of via same thing but dehydration is most concern also.  Good thing he is drinking..keep him cool meanwhile and Best of Luck for him to feel better.
