I potty trained Ethan 3 days after his second birthday. I didn't think for a moment he would take to it as he seemed quite young still and wasn't showing much interest but just tried him without a nappy on in the garden and showed him the potty and he did it. I was only really trying to get him use to sitting on potty but he just took to it. It took about a week or so until he was dry all day without any accidents. He wasn't dry at night though til he was 2 1/2.  My friends little one was 3 before he started potty training but he did it all of a sudden and was dry day and night straight away. I think every lo is different.

My nana is telling me Ellie should be out of nappies and has been doing for several months (she's 21 mths)  but she's defiantely not ready yet (neither am I).

Good luck with the potty training.

Ds was 3 before we even thought about trying (boys are supposed to be a bit later than girls)

It's best to start when they are aware that they are weeing / pooing and can tell you about it! And preferably when they are able to take their own undies down too!

Hannah (22 months) will occasionally tell me she has wee'd and will go and get her nappy, wipes and cream. But she only tells me after, and denies point blank that she's pooed - even when the flies are buzzing round her!!!

So we're not starting with Hannah until maybe the summer - when she can run around in the garden with very little on and have her accidents away from the carpets!!  I don't think there's any mileage in tearing your hair out to get them out of nappies too early - it's a whole lot easier going out for the day with nappies anyway!!!

I havent even thought about starting to potty train lewis yet.  He's nearly 22 months and still hasnt got bladder control and doesnt even tell me when hes weed let alone pooed.  I suppose he will come to it once hes ready.  Would be a bit worried if hes still in nappies by the time he goes to school!!!!

i waited till Taylor was ready.. i don't beleive in pushing them out of nappies until they are ready.. there is a lot of pressure these days to get lo's out of nappies.. why?? there babies!!! I think its the "my baby is better than yours" syndrome grrrrr.. but i do agree about being out of them by the time they go to mainstream school (4)

I cant remember the age Taylor was when he decided he was ready, it was quite late as he didnt mind if he had a wet or dirty nappy on (strange child)

I think cause i waitied for him, it was very easy... i left the potty in the front room and he just used it.. from then on he hardly went in his nappy and used the potty all the time.

Hi i have twin daughters that have just turned 2 a month ago. When i bathed them or changed them i get their potty out and tell them that if they need to wee then they use their potty. Jamie-leigh did for the first time last week when i wasn't looking. I'm still waiting for Ashleigh but i don't make them i just let them do it when they are ready. I am sooo proud of her. I think the best thing to do is just let him do it when he is ready. When he does just praise him till the cows come home lol. Thats the only advice i can give at this time as i am new to this. Goodluck hun hope you get him sorted. xxx

thanx for all the advice girls i really appriciate it,

joshua does tell me when he has peed and pooed in his nappy that is why i go through so much nappies he wants me to change his nappy as soon as he has had a wee,

when i was about to put joshua in the bath earlier after writing this he asked to go on the toilet so i sat him on the toilet and he had a little wee both of us were shouting with excitement he loved it just hopefully  that it wasent a one off.

It might be an idea then to encourage him to go to the toilet instead of the potty. You can buy the potties with steps on so he can climb up his-self. Maybe this is the way forward.

Ethan, my eldest, was about 26 months when I started pottly training him, as he was my first and I got sucked into that whole thing of everyone telling me what I should be doing and believing them! You know, aunts who tell you that your cousins were dry at 8 months old etc... (yeah, right)

Anyway, I persevered for about 2 months, it was a complete disaster, so I put him back in nappies and did it again when he was almost three and he got it in a few days and was dry at night too. In fact, it was the fact that his nappy was always dry in the morning that made me re-start, so he had it at night before he had it during the day.

Noah, I waited until he was about 2yrs 9 months and he got it in 2 days flat. Same thing with the dry-at-night nappy.

Joe was almost 3 too, and took a while. He's now 3 and three months and, though he has got it really, he does still have accidents sometimes when we go somewhere new or if he's busy with something, or just plain old can't be bothered. He also gets terribly constipated and is on medication for that so he often has poo accidents due to overspill (TMI, sorry!).

They're all different. If Joshua's happy to sit on the potty or loo, then keep encouraging him, it can only help in the long run, but don't be too disappointed if the novelty wears off and he doesn't want to for a while. I also found those foldable potties with the disposable liners a godsend for when out and about and the boys needed to go like now!

Good luck!
