I weaned Ella at 15 weeks, with the support of my HV. I hung out as long as I could, but she was drinking 50 oz plus a day of hungry baby milk.
The guidelines say 4 to 6 months, but encourage you to wait until 6 months as this significantly reduces the chance of allergies and intollerences to foods, and also more importantly, the digestive systems are better prepared.
I know 2 babies who got to 6 months before being weaned, but it is only 2! 1 was breastfed, 1 was forumla fed. I really do think its down to the individual child.
I did a mix of making my own and using jars and packets. I made veg pures at home and it was really really easy. I would either have a cook up one afternoon and freeze loads, or I'd do some of what every veg we were having. With fruits, I did apple, banana and pear myself, but then I bought jars at it was more cost effective. I also used jars if we went out as it was more convenient, and places don't usually like to heat home made food.
Cow and Gate do a free weaning pack which I found really useful. You don't have to use C&G products to get it, you can just ring the helpline which is on thier website.
