Ok odd question - I have been sent a short video by a friend and I want to take a still image from it. I am having brain block - blame the morphine - and just cannot get my head around how to get the still image - help please.

Depends on the format of the movie and player being used. You could just use CTRL + ALT + PRINT SCREEN, which will take a screen dump of the current active window to your clipboard, you then simply need to paste it into a blank document in your preferred image editing software, then crop the image if needed to remove any window bars and controls.
