It can be a little laggy depending on how our web server is performing, we have quite a few issues recently with the site running slow, there is nothing I can do about this but keep nagging our hosts.
The main chat-room basically communicates with the server every 3 seconds when everything is running at 100%, occasionally, if the server is under load one of these requests from you, the client, to the server can get dropped or lost meaning it's not uncommon to have a period of 6 seconds where nothing appears to happen, giving the appearance you described above, I know it is far from ideal but it as the moment the most economical solution we have. Other factors that will effect the chat-room performance are the speed and quality of your internet connection as well as the speed of your PC.
The chatterbox (my own little creation) works slightly differently, this basically **refreshes the page every 10 seconds or when you send a message if this is between the 10 second refreshes. Now if 3 people all post a message within the 10 second interval, all 3 of these messages will appear on your screen at once, members were used to this but since we installed the full chat room, I've seen several complaining that the chatterbox is not working correctly or is slow, it's not slow it just works differently (as explained above) to the main chat-room, it is also not designed to be used as chat room it is simply a quick form of communicating short messages to other visitors to the site.
**For the chatterbox to automatically refresh new messages every 10 seconds you need to switch the refresh on using the button, if refresh if off new messages will only appear every time you change or manually refresh the page.
