There's an news article on the front page with the above title, if you've not read it, click HERE

I found this really interesting as when Ella was born, the midwives in the hospital told me that I was not to feed her whilst lying down. I've since found out that this is total rubbish and there is no reason why I couldn't have fed her lying down.

Ella was evicted (born my emergency c-section) so I found laying her across my front to feed to be really uncomfortable as I couldn't sit in a way that was comfortable for me and her. I had most success with the rugby ball position, but by this time I was cracked, sore and bleeding.

I found this article fascinating and wondered if anyone breastfed lying down and whether they found it easier. Its interesting that they've said in the article that it helped women to continue for longer, did anyone else find this?

Its interesting to me as since I've had Ella I've found out that I was told a lot of inaccurate things about breastfeeding and had I known what I know now, I would probably have been able to continue to feed her longer.

Discuss!

dizie - i also had c-section, and i was told to breast feed lying down i only did for the first few days in hospital untill i felt better and was able to sit up properly, in the night at home i used to feed lying down too, i cant say if this helped me feed longer or not as i gave up at 6 weeks - i didnt think molly was getting enough from me as she wasnt gaining weight, its so annoying when you get wrong advice in hospitals and by h/vs etc. xx jue xx

I did on and off.

The first night in hospital I had no help with Eds (didnt want it) but of course I still had my cathiter in and was pretty numb waist down from my c sec. I couldnt sit up that well so I layed Eds down next to me and fed him like that on and off all night. It was fine until the following night he kicked - right at my scar! OUCH. Had to take lots of painkillers and was much more careful from then.

Once I had him home I found I leaked more if I did that so sat him on a big V cushion.

I gave thomas his 1st feed lying down and i found this the most
comfortable position to feed in until feeding was esablished and was
able to sit in a chair without crying (i had loads of stitches)

- although it was a bit tricky when out and about - not many places to
lie down. LOL

As the article said - it's whatever you find comfortable.

I had a retained placenta, so whilst in the delivery suite the midwife urged me to feed Joshua, even though I made it clear I wanted to do bottle feeding. I was in pain and hours after birth still on the drip to induce contractions, they were thick and fast and so I gave up protesting and fed him. She told me to lie back as it would be the most comfortable. He had 2 feeds like that in the delivery suite, it didnt help the placenta so I went to surgery and my mum fed him his first bottle feed. I did not want to breastfeed him.

PMSL - That's a very good point though Rhona!

Its interesting to read the differing advice that we're given in hospitals.

It's awful the amount of conflicting advice about breastfeeding.

I fed my two lying down at times, especially at night, it suited me and
was lovely and comfy. I'm off to read the article now!

isla, well she wouldnt have it at all, and fed her sitting up etc.

I do now have interesting visions of peeps lying down all over the place to breastfeed...could make quing for a bus interesting lol

Lying down was the best way to get any of mine to feed!  I started all 5 of them on te breast, and it was only due to aving to hold them in certain ways etc that I ended up all sore etc with the last one.  If I had been left to my own devices, and been reminded of the fact that my hindmilk was richer for lo for putting on weight, I would have continued breastfeeding alot longer.  At night it was so much easier, and for me I knew I wouldn't sleep on top of him, as I was always in a ball so I couldn't.  They were all much better during the night than during the day!
