Hi, I was wanting to know about anyones experience with Breastfeeding and the type of birth control that you use.  I am not breastfeeding yet, I am still pregnant, I have a couple months to go.  But I have to return to work after only 6 weeks of leave, so I will be pumping and breastfeeding and I don't want to take something that will make my milk supply diminish.

Can anyone share their experiences with me on what kind of birth control you used and if it affected your milk supply??

Thanks!!

Hi hun i believe you can still take the pill even when you are breast feeding. Normally if you get going quite regular you shouldn't in theory dry up although i know some ppl do. There are tablets though that can help stimulate the breast milk if this starts to happen. I was offered these as my girls were 8 weeks prem and my body wasn't fully prepared. I breast fed for 3 weeks but gave up as i wanted to get them home.

I'm sorry i'm not much help but i'm sure there will be plenty of other ppl who will be able to advice you tc. xxxxxxx

I used the coil whilst feeding but I was regually feeding as opposed to expressing.

Speak to your GP or Health Visitor who I'm sure will be able to advice you.

Good luck!

Hi, I am breastfeeding and taking the mini pill. It has had no adverse affects on my milk supply. As long as you feed your baby whenever you can and express inbetween, you should be fine. However, if you do have problems, fenugreek is great to build up your supply. You can get it in tablet form from health food shops. Also oats are great too, so getting eating loads of flabjack!

Yup, the mini pill is fine, and as breastfeeding works on a "supply and demand" basis, that is the more you empty your breasts the more milk will be made, then you shouldn't have any problems, just as Mandie said.

When I was breastfeeding my daughter I used the mini pill, you do have a narrow time frame in which to take it though, within an hour the same time every day.  With my son I used a diaghram and found it very easy and convenient to use. hth

Hello there. I just stopped BF after 6 months. I am a full time working mom and had to pump durning the day. It is very hard work and you have to be dedicated to do it. The mini-pill is good but the main thing you want is a pill with no estrogen. If you are not looking to get pregnant for a while you may want to think about an IUD. They have some that work for 5 years and will not effect BF. Hope it works out for you. If you have any questions or problems please PM me and i will help in any way i can. Hope it works out for you.
