hannah is now 12 weeks old and is fully bf - she is up every 3 hours on average in the night for a feed (sometimes more/rarely less) which I could cope with but she wakes at about 4.30am and thrashes around with what seems like bellyache - it can take her up to 90 mins to settle again - I end up bringing her onto our bed and keep giving her the dummy whenever she starts thrashing - about every 10-20 mins...she does very loud forceful trumps when she’s crying/thrashing about..I give her gripe water after every night feed but I can never get a burp up in the night..she only poos once every 4-5 days but it is truly explosive when it comes... the 5am thing is always the same no matter what I eat altho I haven’t tried cutting out dairy etc. she feeds about every 3 hours in the day..and I feed her at 7.30pm and put her to bed regardless of when her last feed was..any ideas how to stop her doing this? thanks

Is she taking a full-cycle feed Greeds? By that I mean is she getting to the end of the feed (that some people think is the time they use the breast as a dummy) it's when they almost seem to be "fluttering" wee sooks at the breast and almost seem sleepy too. But they become upset if you try and take them off because they've got to the full-fat stuff. If she gets a full feed like this she should go a bit longer between feeds. The problem is some babies get into a cycle of short feeding, filling up with fore-milk at every feed and needing to feed more frequently as a result. You can get over this by putting her back to the same side at her next feed, and trying to get out and about, or get someone else to take her for 4 hours at least, so she'll come back to you wanting a really full feed. If she's getting too much fore milk and not enough hind milk this can cause really explosive wind. Are her poos a green colour?
She does seem to be going quite a long gap between bowel movements, have you been to the GP? Perhaps she has a wee blockage so it might be worthwhile getting checked. What does your hv say about this?

Have you tried tummy massage? Eds got really bad wind at night and I could never get him to burp. DP had better success as he used to hang him over his shoulder (arms down back, feet down front) and that angle would help produce the burp, I couldnt do it as my shoulders werent broad enough.
I would say 4-5 days is a long time between poos. I'd follow lynies advice and mention it to your GP.

I just mentioned the poo thing to the hv and she said it was ok for a bf baby - I do remember ellie being the same too...and just to say I'm a liar, hannah has just had a poo and 2 yesterday..!
lynie, should I try and make her go longer between feeds in the day too? say 3.5-4 hours? (she does this sometimes herself?) - and then try making her go 4 hours in the night too?
she quite often falls asleep sucking/feeding in the night anyway so I take her off and put her back to bed, maybe she is still feeding when doing that so not filling up, I never thought of that...to be honest, sometimes I don't even know if she's hungry, I am soo tired I stick her on the boob anyway to make her sleepy again!

mmmmmm. If she's putting on weight and her poos are an Ok colour then she's doing OK. Is she now going for a longer period at night without a feed? There should be one time at least she'll go longer.
If you think she's not going through the proper feed cycle I'd be tempted to try and get her a bit longer between feeds. The other thing she may be doing is gulping in air either when she's feeding or with her dummy, this would be causing all the explosions! (although bf babies are famous for their loud bottoms!)

yes, she is putting weight on fine - had her weighed today, hadn't been for 7 weeks, poor little mite, I took ellie every fortnight lol
she has sometimes gone 5 even over 6 hours (twice, woohoo!) between feeds in the night - I think tonight I will try to hold off feeding her in case she is waking out of habit rather than hunger..she does gulp quite a lot but I think my milk comes out really fast so she's not got much choice really bless her..
pesky dummy is doing my head in but that's another problem lol
I'm feeling a bit better thanks, how are you?! twins, I still can't believe it

I found that Owen was really windy if I ate garlic and green veg maybe worth noting what you eat? I used infacol and a herbal remedy that's like little balls and you put it on the tongue before feeding (can't remember the name)
When I was breastfeeding Owen fed every 3.5-4 hours until I weaned him but up every 4/5 during the night. My friend feeds her lo every 3 hours and gets longer out of her during the night, she thinks it's because she fills her up during the day.

Ethan and Joe both used to get terrible wind in the night and then do explosive poos. (In fact, Joe did one that was so explosive once when we'd taken the others to McDonalds, that as I lifted his bum up to put the new nappy under, he trumped and shot some straight across the baby change room and it stuck to the door 6 feet away!)
When she's distressed, try lying her down on her front, if you can get her into the position easily and safely then it helps more if their legs are drawn up to their tummy, and just rub the lower part of her back. This helps them to pass the wind. Otherwise, like Madz says, gently rub their tummy in a clockwise motion. I used to find that carrying them so that they were draped across one arm, with their head in the crook of my elbow and their tummy on the ball of my hand helped too, as the gentle pressure on their tummy was soothing. I was definitely told that it's quite normal and OK for breastfed babies not to poo very often as there's so little waste.
Do you think it's possible that she is gasping on the dummy and taking in more air? I know they are soothing, but it might be a viscious circle that the dummy helps the symptoms but is contributing to the problem? Take heart Greedy, this phase won't last ever so much longer and one of these days she will sleep for longer and then you'll wake in a panic wondering why...
