Are you prepared to be broad minded! Tandem breastfeeding means feeding more than one and both a baby & toddler at the same time!

What do you think? There are a surprising number of web sites specifically on this subject on breastfeeding both your baby & toddler at the same time. The sites seem to say it's healthy & reassuring for both your infants. And, you can still maintain the special close bond with your toddler without him or her losing out health wise & feeling jealous. And, this doesn't effect the baby's weight gain, because you are always making more milk.

Would you consider doing this, if you got pregnant far too early? I might if my toddler was a very very young one.

P.S. I bf my eldest till 21 mths

I know a few people who have done this, but have never dne t myself. I suppose if toddler was really young (under 18 mths) then maybe I would, but if older I'd try weaning before baby was born. I suppose its down to personal choice really.

I dont have a problem with other people doing this but I personally wouldn't.  I have seen this on a program and once the baby went onthe breast the mother found it much more difficult to get the toddler off it through jealousy.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it wouldn't be for me.

I had seriously considered this when I got pregnant too early (it ended in a MMC anyway) & I was still breastfeeding my 7 mth daughter at the time.

I am glad to know from 'bensmum', that she knows other have done it. It does takes alot of courage to do something like this.

Keep the views coming in, I am interested!

I never thought about this as it was so unlikely to happen (Because of medical reasons it wasnt recommended I fell pregnant again too soon after the birth of my son). However if the situation came up I would have to consider what was best for us. I breastfed my son until he was 11 months, he self weaned from the breast at this point.

I certainly have no problem with it. By the time the baby comes along the toddler is likely to only be on morning and night feeds so it wouldnt interfere too much anyway.

The tandem web sites seem to say that expect your toddler to want to be on your breast alot at first. This is a common phrase the toddler goes through & he or she will soon get bored, realising the new baby is no threat.

Mumsam - Sorry to hear you MC twice & please don't think that BFG whilst pregnant might've had something to do with your MC.

When I got pregnant with my 2nd DD, I was still BFG my eldest DD for the few mths of the pregnancy, till my bump started to show. My 2nd DD is absolutely healthy & fine & I had a normal birth with her. And, I did check with my doctor about this when I went to register my pregnancy. My doctor had said it's harmless, don't worry.

When my MMC was discovered (3rd pregnancy), I did question & asked my consultant at the hospital about BFG whilst pregnant. He told me THREE times over it's harmless & it's NOT linked to my MMC. I believed him.

I was seriously considering tandem BFG, because I thought it wouldn't be fair that my 2nd DD would have to come off the breast much earlier than her older DS who had the full maxium benefits from it. I wanted to all my children to have the same.
Toddlers don't have much breastmilk anyway, so what's the harm.

I never considered breastfeeding to be a contributing factor to me mc'ing.  I do however know that my mc was what caused my son to stop bf'ing as my milk dried up when I mc'ed to return a week later but by then my son had decided he didn't want to feed anymore he was 21months old.  I bf my middle daughter until she was 3yrs old.  My son was feeding 3 times a day and sometimes in the night when he weaned.  My mc's are to do with my age and partners age nothing else.
