Hello ladies,

I am new to this website and just finding my feet. I wanted to ask for a bit of advice re: breast feeding.

My LO is going to be 4wks old tomorrow and he is gaining weight (the HV has no concerns in this department), he has pleanty of wet and dirty nappies but when he latches on there is a clicking noise when he's feeding. I have heard that this means he isnt latched on properly but my nipples are not sore and it isnt painful when he is feeding.

Should I be worried?

I would be grateful for any advice...

Hi, welcome to MM's.

I would say that if you aren't sore and baby is gaining weight and has wet nappies like you say you have nothing to worry about.  Some babies make very strange noises when they feed, my middle daughter was so noisy there was no way you could feed her discreetly.

Just keep checking your positioning when you latch him on and it sounds like you have it cracked.

Well done.

aw congratulations on your LO!!

I'd say if he is gaining weight ok and your boobs don't hurt, then you're doing it just fine!  If he wasn't latched on properly it would hurt like hell, trust me!

Just wanted to say welcome to Madmums and congratulations on your lo.

There are some really experienced breastfeeders on this site (all of whom I will be calling on when I have another one!) so please do feel free to ask whatever.

Hi, and huge congratulations on your new little boy!

My youngest made the most bizarre noises when he was feeding. My sister used to say that he sounded like a pig snuffling for truffles! He, too, made this clicking sound and my MW said it was where they make a vacuum in their mouth and are trying to suck faster than they can actually get the milk, so the vacuum breaks, and the inside of their mouth opens with this click. It's nothing at all to worry about, as eveyone else has said, if he's contentedly full and you are not sore, then everything is working perfectly.

Don't worry about asking any question at all. I wish there had been sites like this when my eldest was born as it does take a while to find your feet, and you're constantly wanting to make sure you're doing things right. Every new (and 'old') mum feels this way - I rang my sister in law at nearly midnight once because my baby had just done a bright green poo and it freaked me right out!

Well done, again, and see you around

Rachel xxx

Thank you all for your kind words. Its great to have sites like this when your a new mum, especially with Nathaniel being my first. I seem to be questioning eveything I do at the moment, I suppose its only natural though!!!! I absolutely love breast feeding, before I got pregnant I always thought I would bottle feed because thats what most of my friends & relatives have done. Now I am so glad I choose to feed him myself, even in the early hours of the morning!!!!!!

And to ' 3smallboys' I think you could be right about my LO sucking too fast. He really does go for it when he first latches on to the breast but come to think of it the clicking sound does get less once he's been feeding for a while...

Anyway I better go I think my little man is starting to stir

Speak to you all soon,

Rachel and baby Nathaniel

Well done Rachel!  I never quite mastered the fine art of breastfeeding, my lo's lost weight and weren't latchng on and it was painful!  My first was the one I managed for the longest, but good for you.  Welcome to mm's.  Hope to chat to you soon!
