I have to do a project for college and as I may go on to study Nutrition in the future, I thought breastfeeding might be a good one - plus, we have to do a questionnaire and I am thinking this might be an easy one to do!

I want to investigate why the breastfeeding rates in the UK are so low -

I know that a few of you are members of breastfeeding groups and so I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for some good sources of info e.g. websites, organisations etc.

If anyone has any printed material that they wouldn't mind sending me, I would really appreciate it, and I will obviously pay the postage for that...please PM me if this is the case..

I'm not allowed to get all my info from the internet so if anyone knows of any good books or magazine articles on the subject, I would be very grateful...

Many thanks!  Greedy, x

ohhh- yes give me a wee moment to track stuff down...

Off the top of my head I know that some studies say that the
breastfeeding rate is so low in the UK due to the lack of the
traditional family support of passing down the skill of breastfeeding
from generation to generation. At the turn of the century when
formula milk was developed it was a luxury item that many women
aspired to afford. Over the years formula became more affordable
and more and more women turned to it's convienience- and it was
positively advertised by health professionals. I think I'm right in
saying it hit a peak in the 60's and 70's. But, as more research
developed into the benefits of breastfeeding the more educated in
society turned back to breastfeeding. So now in the UK we have
generally reached the point where more affluent areas have a higher
percentage of mothers breastfeeding at 6 weeks, and the more
educated the mother the more likely she is to try to breastfeed.
THIS IS GENERALLY FOLKS, BEFORE YOU ALL JUMP DOWN MY
THROAT, AND BACKED BY RESEARCH!!!! And, adversly, the less
affluent areas of Britain suffer from the worst breastfeeding rates. (I
actually live in the WORST area for breastfeeding rates in Scotland, I
think it's the second worst in the whole of the UK). Lots of mums
come across problems when they start to try and breastfeed and if
they don't have proper and consistent advice and support they are
more likely to give up. As we come from a culture of bottlefeeding,
and when people we know and trust advise us to put the baby on the
bottle as it will solve all our problems we are likely to take this
advice- unless, again we have a strong support network.

Bottlefeeding seems to settle babies better than breastmilk as it fills
the baby's tummy (hence some bottlefed babies sleeping longer).
Breastmilk is easily absorbed by the baby's body, so in the first few
weeks the baby will appear to be needing fed more often than a
bottlefed baby- also, as the mum's body works to a supply and
demand basis the baby needs to be brought to the breast frequently
and sometimes for a long period of time to stimulate milk supply.
Often this is simply not convienient for mums, especially if they have
other children to look after. But, for most mums, if they persevere
for 6 weeks breastfeeding becomes simple and easy. The problem
most health professionals now have is supporting mums to the 6
week mark- especially with the current shortage of midwives and
health visitors.

It has been researched also that most girls know how they will try to
feed their baby from a young age, even before they meet their
partners. And this is influenced by how their mother fed them and
any positive or negative experience they have come across of
breastfeeding, and if they have been conditioned to see breasts as
purely sexual!

I'll away and look for the real sources of this for you...

http://www.abm.me.uk/policies.htm

This is quite a good study into why breastfeeding rates might be low in the UK.  It takes into account that low income families are provided with milk tokens for formula fed babies whilst breastfeeding mothers do not receive the same support.  It's also fairly well referenced so might help you find further reading on the subject.

I would guess the other thing to consider is the fact that a lot of mothers return to work before the baby is 6mnths old (due to financial commitments) and most companies in the UK are not supportive of breastfeeding mothers even though the government have put legislation in place to support working mothers who breast feed.

Another aspect that might be good to consider is body image in the UK.  So much is focused on how we should look and what our bodies are for that we have lost the natural use for it.  I was astounded and still am by women that want to stop breastfeeding quickly because they "want their body back".  The only down side that I can really think of is not being able to ware a dress, which doesn't really bother me.  My eldest daughter who has witnessed her sister and brother being breastfed thinks it's horrid and can't imagine herself ever doing it.  It's more about how she views her body though than what is best for her babies.  Her body is something to be toned and tamed into what society thinks is the norm and what is shown in magasines and on the tv.  No soaps portray breastfeeding mothers.  The only soap that did portray it shortly was Eastenders recently and they made it look like the most horrid thing to do ever and they didn't even highlight that Honey was trying to breastfeed a Down Syndrome baby which can carry it's own problems in sucking, etc.

I have a good book that looks at the history of parenting it's not just about breastfeeding but looks at parenting in different cultures through time.  If it is useful to you I would be happy to lend it to you.  It is called "Our babies ourselves" by Meredith small.  It's an interesting read if nothing else. hth
