Technically it should be around 6 months, but all lo's are different and are ready for different types of food at different stages. Rianna is only just over 5 months but loves to gnaw on a rusk, if you feel that Ryan is ready for having a good chew on carrot, or cheese, then i would say as long as you feel comfortable and are supervising him at all times then why not. but i would also reccommend speaking with your hv as a precaution 1st.

Sorry if this isnt much help but i always go by instinct with my lo's.

Fred is already having the food with lumps in, and I gave him a rusk for the first time to hold yesterday, and he made a HUGE mess.  I had fun clearing it up!  You have to do it gradually, and you just start introducing it gradually!  As for carrot sticks, when i get carrots in I'll give him a go, you just ahve to watch in case any big bits get bitten off, so they don't choke, but again discuss it with hv if you are really not sure!

HTH hun, and good luck!

Ols won't eat anything with a lump in yet and still gags on it.  But he will eat little bits of banana if I am eating a banana.  It's a bit of trial and error I think.  Like Thumbles says as long as you are there incase of any choking and you are happy just try.

Ryan started having lumpy food at 6 months but i found it helped that before he had a lumps he had well mashed food like mashed potato or would mix extra baby rice in with his purees to make them nice and thick. it takes them a little while to get used to the different textures, some lo's don't mind and some take ages to get used to it but they all get there in the end.
