I'm having an elective c-section on medical advice in just under 4 weeks time and one of the pre-op appointments is to have a blood thinning injection on the day before the op. Has anyone else had one of these?
Ella was born by emergency c-section and I had the injections into my stomach on the days after the op, but hadn't heard of them being done before. The drug name is celaxane and apparently this should help avoid the problem I had last time with clots.
I'm not massively worried about it (she lies) but was just surprised as I've not heard of this before. I'll be asking about it at my next appointment, but just wondered what anyone else's experiences were?

I had clexane after I had Ollie not sure if that is the same drug. It's more or less the same as heparin, thins the blood like you say. I never had it before I had him. I do know that quite often clexane is given before major surgery especially abdo to thin the blood, you normally have to have your INR checked though to make sure it isn't too thin.

I had blood thinning injections after ds but not before and that was an emergency c-section, but after choosing a c-section with dd i didn't have them before or after the birth, but saying that, they couldn't see that dd was very ill until a very nice lady pointed out that my baby looked a funny colour, after ignoring my own concerns.

Ive had the jab your on about LOOOOOOADS of times...not for c-section granted...but for lumpectomy, mastectomy and hysterectomy...hey im collecting ectomies...sounds ace, just rolls off the tongue lol.
It stings..but they give you it to prevent blood clots etc which can be dangerous for obvious reasons. Its nothing to worry about chica, it does what it says on the tin...and for your health its a good thing chica.

Lucky you, I have the opposite effect when I am pg, I need blood thickening, as I would usually bleed to death! Because you have a previous history of clotting (way too much obviously), then they are erring on the side of caution. You are being looked after! On the other hand ONLY 4 WEEKS LEFT??????? Nice one!

I KNOW! This time in 4 weeks I'll be a Mum of 2 - aghghghg!
I'm going to ask more about the jab when I see the midwife in 2 weeks, I thought the hospital said it would be in my tummy - although I'm not sure where they'd put the needle as its all baby round that area! I may have misheard, or of course my stomach could well be near my armpit by the time baby's moved everything around..
The clots I had last time built up in my uterus and stopped it contracting, and caused me to lose a lot of blood, apparently they give this injection pre-op to anyone who had a postpartum hemorrhage of over 500ml - which I did - although they will check my blood before anyway.
Of all the people I've know have an elective section, I've not heard of anyone having this jab. Will see what the midwife/hospital say.
