Its unlikely you are in labour at the moment.

Many women have a show a few days before labour starts or it can be a few weeks before. It does mean something is starting to happen and baby should make an appearance soon.

Most people say if you have to ask - then you are not in labour - you'll know about it when you are.

If you still have questions call your MW again.

Hi. Are the tightenings a regular space apart or are they random? Also, are they increasing in intensity?

I would time them over an hour and if they are regular and getting stronger, you could well be in the early stages of labour. If they're irratic still, then you've probably got a way to go.

I had a show at 37 weeks with my 1st and the braxton hicks/tightenings seemed to get stronger after that, but I didn't actually go into labour.

Its a waiting game I'm afraid - good luck!

I'm 37 + 5 at the moment and I'm having tightenings and braxton hicks and they are definately more intense when the baby is moving about. I've also got quite a bit of lower back pain. Some of the pains I've been having have bought tears to my eyes. At the moment, they're not regular or getting stronger in intensity and they do settle down as the day goes on.

From what you've said, I'd guess that right now you're not in labour - although I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination! Keep an eye on how things go and if you start to get regular pains, time them and keep a note of how they progress over an hour and how they feel. If they're building or getting closer together, call your midwife or the delivery suite at your hospital for advice.

For the back pain, I've been using a heated wheat pillow or a hot water bottle - this has really helped! As for the rest, I know its easier said than done but try and get as much rest as you can. Lying on your side with a pillow between your legs may bring some comfort, or sitting with your feet up. Like I say, easier said than done but this may well help!

Not long now, try and listen to what your body is telling you and get as much rest as you can now.

Take care!
