Hi ladies-
I am glad this post is on here. very interesting to read everything. I was wondering those of you who have boys...when did you start potty training. my doc says that for boys the target age is 2 yrs. 9 mos.
Joey will tell me after he has pooped but no warning ahead of time. how do you all begin???

Hello and welcome to madmums!
I think having a target age can be misleading, every child is different. You'll probably find that he'll be ready when he's ready in his own time. My boy was nearer 3 when he was fully trained and I wish I hadn't wasted so much time and energy worrying about it beforehand- he just did it when he was ready, had full control of his functions and could communicate well enough to ask for help if he needed it. Children need to have good fine motor skills to be able to pull down their trousers, underwear, position on the toilet or potty, wipe and pull everything back up, wash their hands, flush... And sometimes some folk expect tiny wee tots to be able to do this. He'll be fine and do it in his own time!

We started with Adam just after we moved here so he was about 3 yrs 2 mths old. He wasnt ready till then. Even now we still haven't got the poo thing sorted!

Ollie will be 3 next march and whilst he will wee on the potty when he wants to and sit on the toilet when he wants to, he is more than happy to use the nappy, the floor, the sofa or your lap should he feel he doesn't want to sit on the toilet or the potty. I don't think he quite has the brain signal that says I need the loo yet because like I said he will go on the potty and he knows how to try but he will try 20 times if he is in the right mood even if he does a big wee the first time. So he hasn't associated the feeling of needing to wee with going to the loo yet. I am not bothered you don't see many 18 year old boys wearing nappies he will get there when he is ready.

Taylor was around 3, i didn't bother starting until he knew what a peepee and a poopoo were.. i then bought a potty and explained if he needed to go then to use the potty.. it was a while until he used it for the first time properly, before that it was a hat!!
Im a strong believer that if they are not ready, don't push them.. it will just stress you both out..

Hiya! I have identical twin boys, one was dry in the day by 2yrs 11months the other was 3yrs 4months!! The kids cant read whatever book says 2yr 9mths !!! you just have to judge your own child and go from there!! Who cares how long it takes, and long as you are both happy with things.

I had no choice as to when my boys started, they led me!
Max started at 2 years 2 months, but to be honest his nursery did most of the hard work. He was dry at night around 3 years old, but even now he has the odd accident.
I'm currently potty training my younger son. Tom's 2 and a half and can tell me easily when he needs to go, but refuses point blank to poo without a nappy on. I'm not worried, when he's ready to do it without the security padding then he'll let me know. He usually tells me 'mummy, wee-wee' or mummy, poo-poo' and then he takes himself off to his potty.
I guess they all do it at their own individual paces.

Cameron was a lot older than the girls when he was properly toilet-trained - over 3 when he stopped holding onto his poos til his bedtime nappy - although quite quick out of his night-time nappies once he had daytime sussed! (if that makes sense?lol) Also, he hated the potty, and hardly used it at all - we gave it away and went straight to the toilet.
I agree with the other ladies - you'll know yourself when he's ready.
