We started to potty train Rachel a over week ago, she is doing great....only two accidents so far BUT the poos seem to be a big problem for her. I think she might be holding onto her poos because she doesn't like doing them.

I am not sure if she is just constipated or constipated because she is holding onto her poo (if that is possible) I was also thinking that if she was afraid to do her poos in the toilet would she make them in her night time nappy. (I am going to hold off on the night time training for a another few weeks even tho the nappy is dry in the morning.)

I feel I have come this far now there is no turning back and wehn I gave her a choice of a nappy or nickers she said the she was a big girl now and wanted a nickers and no more nappies.

Congratulations on the potty training so far, as for making yourself constipated by waiting, this is possible as ds does this most of the time and is on daily medication to make him go, we now play the game of sneaky poo, ds has to beat sneaky poo by going on the toilet not in his pants and if he goes on the loo before any in his pants then ds wins, we are having mixed results so far, but the hospital did say it would take along time to change his habits. Hope Rachel keeps up the success's

Thanks for the sneaky poo idea !

Adam is terrible for holding on to his poos as well. He will go every 3 days or so.

As most people have found out, getting lo's to poo in potty/toilet instead of pants/nappy is a HUGE problem. I think perseveerence (sp) and consistancy works best. We had some stickers for Ben and if he poo'd on the potty he got one, but if it was in his pants we took one off him. That seemed to work. But each child is different hunny. Good luck and I'm sure she'll get there!

Congratulations to Rachel on doing so well so far, but it is still early days if she's only been doing it for just over a week.. just give her a bit more time to get used to the idea first, its a very big step for a lo to comprehend, so im sure she will just get the hang of it all in her own time.
Its great that given the choice, she wants to be in knickers now, so keep going with her.. it sounds like she's doing just fine!

Hello Martha,

I'd read your post with much interest as Tom is exactly the same with doing 'the other'.  He doesn't mess, and like your little girl knows when he needs to go and it's a case of he either does it in a nappy or holds it in.

Like the others have said and yourself I'm certain it's just a phase, that maybe when he'd done a poo before the splash back (lovely phrase) may have startled him and so now he's too scare to do it by association.

But I can't imagine him being 16 and scared of doing nature's biz in the loo so I'll just be patient and put up with my son's weird habit for the time being.

Don't fret, it'll work out in the end.
