Having got two children through the potty training process already, you'd think I would have a clearer idea on the situation.

My problem is my daughter Katie.  She's two years and eight months and still to be potty trained.  I've tried it a few times, but to no avail.  We're only on day two this time but already I'm at my wits end.

Katie started nursery on Tuesday and they requested that I start potty training.  I've got so much going on at the moment that I haven't a lot of patience with this sort of thing.  In two days I've gone through about 14 pairs of knickers, 3 times they've been soiled.

Katie will happily sit on the potty, do her business on it...when she chooses to.  I ask all the time if she wants a wee and she says no.  Minutes later she's had another accident.  Being wet or soiled doesn't bother her, she'll quite happily sit and play in her dirty underwear.

I'm worried time is getting on and she should be trained, with her now attending the nursery, and the cost of nappies, (I have two in nappies), but I dont know if she's not ready yet or just being plain lazy, and if i can get through these early days it'll just click with her.

Any comments or advice would be so much appriciated.

Isla will be 3 in september and is still showing no signs of being bothered about potty trained.  Feeling left behind as majority of girlies round here have all got theres done, with no hassles and no accidents (hmm still don't believe it).  A mate popped round with her 18mth old and announced that she was completely dry through the day and night.....not saying what thoughts were going through my mind but along the lines of......really.

Isla will sit on the potty occasionally but has to be asked to do it, she's quite happy to sit on the loo after her big sister has been on the loo.

My mum set my mind at rest by saying that nobody starts primary school in nappies...don't worry about it.  As for the nursery forcing the issue, oooo so not allowed to do that.  At the end of the day, she'll do it when she's ready and not before then.  Just a nightmare waiting for them to get round to deciding, nothing like them picking independence at the wrong time!  I'm waiting for the school summer holidays before starting in earnest because then I am not runnning round like a headless chicken with school runs etc.  My nursery asked if I had started potty training and I said that I am waiting for her to decide, if she asks for the potty then plonk her on it, if she asks to use the loo, let her do it.  They seemed quite happy with that, as they can then carry on along the same sort of lines as what she has at home.  Might be worth suggesting that to them.

Have fun, hope it helps

thanks hun, you are not wrong with what you're saying.  When I trained my older two they were completely different in every way.  Chloe, my eldest was dry by day at 16 months, she pretty much trained herself, where as  my son, Michael, well thats another story.  He turned 3 in the May and I was desperately trying to get him trained by the time he started school in the September.  When he started school he still wasn't completely dry and even up until reception we still had some accidents.

I've put her in a pull up, she loves dora the explorer and thats what the design is.  We've had a little chat about keeping dora dry and we've gone a whole hour dry.  She hasn't been on the potty yet though either.

I think I'll try her for a couple more days and see how things go, if she is still completely un-cooperative then we'll wait a little longer.

Hi Jen,

We chose a nursery that took 'wet' toddlers. Max started in January this year.  I was adamant that we would let Max lead us.  He started to show signs that he was ready around week 2 of nursery.  He was settled in, and started to show signs that he didnt want to be wearing a nappy anymore.

So we spoke to the teachers again.  At no time did they put pressure on us. They just advised us to pack a spare pair of pants, and we'd see how it went.

The nursery have been responsible for how quickly Max has picked up potty training.  I am convinced that he has been watching the older children use the toilet and has copied them.  I say he is dry, but he still has accidents. He doesn't poo himself just wee accidents.  Apparently, it can take between 7 months to 18 months to get them completely dry so we're not worried.

My advice is this:  Speak to the nursery again.  Tell them you would like Katie to be settled in first.  Once she has started to show that she is ready, then go back to the nursery again and speak to them about commencing potty training.  I really don't think lil Katie needs the pressure right now.  She'll do it all in her own time.

Hth.  Zo xx

PS I got your pm and will reply shortly.

thanks hun...well it all got too much for me at home so I've put katie back in nappies for a while til she shows some sign of being ready.  I'll send her to nursery in a pull up, let them deal with it, if she starts to pick it up off the other kids then i'll carry it on, if not, i'll wait until she is ready.

I'm not rushing any of the kids to do anything, i've learned my lesson from that now, she'll be dry when she wants to be, and not before.

Personally I think its wrong of the nursery to try and rush you into this. Wait until you think Katie is ready, she'll do it in her own time.

Speak to the nursey - like Zoe suggested. They should be able to help you once the time comes.
