Ethan, my eldest, was about 26 months when I started pottly training him, as he was my first and I got sucked into that whole thing of everyone telling me what I should be doing and believing them! You know, aunts who tell you that your cousins were dry at 8 months old etc... (yeah, right)
Anyway, I persevered for about 2 months, it was a complete disaster, so I put him back in nappies and did it again when he was almost three and he got it in a few days and was dry at night too. In fact, it was the fact that his nappy was always dry in the morning that made me re-start, so he had it at night before he had it during the day.
Noah, I waited until he was about 2yrs 9 months and he got it in 2 days flat. Same thing with the dry-at-night nappy.
Joe was almost 3 too, and took a while. He's now 3 and three months and, though he has got it really, he does still have accidents sometimes when we go somewhere new or if he's busy with something, or just plain old can't be bothered. He also gets terribly constipated and is on medication for that so he often has poo accidents due to overspill (TMI, sorry!).
They're all different. If Joshua's happy to sit on the potty or loo, then keep encouraging him, it can only help in the long run, but don't be too disappointed if the novelty wears off and he doesn't want to for a while. I also found those foldable potties with the disposable liners a godsend for when out and about and the boys needed to go like now!
Good luck!
