How do you take your child's temperature when they're ill, and are you pleased with your thermometer?
I have the mothercare digital ear thermometer and find that its as flakey as you like when it comes to readings. Ella isn't well today and the thermometer has been giving readings between 38.2 and 39.4 - in the same ear! I'm alternating calpol and nurofen to try and help her temp, but I've been thinking for a while that perhaps we need a more acurate thermometer! (incidentally, I've just given her a tepid bath and she feels much better to the touch now and flakey thermometer is saying between 36.4 and 37 - phew)
Does anyone have any recomendations? I know that oral ones aren't great for wee ones and I don't really fancy the rectal ones

I had a digital themometer that goes in the ear (like in hospital), and it always seemed quite accurate. It wasn't a branded make, one sold at Tesco I think. It recently got broke, I need to buy another. I was just going to replace it with another digital one.

I have used the forehead strip ones and found them a nightmare to use and get the child to sat still long enough.... i haven't tried the forehead roll over ones yet.... i have found the ones under the arm to be good but difficult as you have to keep stipping the child, holding the arm down to get it to give a reading.... the one i use is the in the ear one.... i have the neurofen one as it was on offer in Llyods pharamcy.... have found this one the easiest to use and as long as you hold the ear lobe downwards and backwards i find the result is normally spot on.

ive always had a great responce and very accurate with the 3 in 1 its oral you can also use it for under-arm which is fab and as a rectal (but i never have and would never fancy taking a reading that way) when mols has had a temp i find under-arm is the best way to take is as 9 times outta 10 shes stripped top half anyway so i find its easier, trying to keep her mouth closed and with the wand under her tongue sometimes can be a nightmare i got mine from boots and would never be without one - have also tried the roll over the forehead one i found it good but i lost it!!!! hope little ella is getting better luv jue xxx

We have the calpol in ear one.. we have used it this week as Jaimee has been teething and also an ear infection in both ears..
In the leaflet it says to test in both ears and then take the average reading.. like... 36.5 in one ear and 37.5 in the other, than the temp would be 37.. (thats if my maths is right)

I swear by the digital ones as they are far more accurate (which is why most of the hospitals use them now).. I have to take Caitlins regularly as she has kidney problems and when she has a flare up, her temp rockets.. Alternating with Calpol & Nurofen really helps and if it doesn't I then have to take her to the Renal unit (usually at least once/twice a year). I find the best way is to check both ears as sometimes if they've been lying on their side, that particular ear shows a higher reading but I definitely wouldn't use anything else. I got mine in boots (the one that you use the little ear cups with) and I think it was about £39.99 at the time.. I don't know how accurate the cheaper ones are but I'd certainly give them a go if this one breaks..
