Awww my poor mum seems to be going through this forever.  She has all the symptoms:  hot flushes, fatigue, periods erratic for years and now ceased, moodiness and now memory loss!

She just can't seem to remember the most basic things.  We laugh about it, but I do worry that she might end up hurting herself cos she's left a cooker on or something.  She thinks she's remembered a particular appointment only to discover it was a figment of her imagination!  I was wondering is there a natural remedy she could take to help combat forgetfulness.

Also she suffers bad with hot flushes, made worse by this heat, bless her.  She says she's taking aspirin for her blood pressure and she's a diabetic so I'm not sure really what medication she can take with it.

Has anyone experienced a love one going through the menopause?  Any advice would be appreciated as the surgery here isn't very helpful.  They wouldn't even diagnose her as going through the menopause until her periods stopped and has never recieved any support or treatment from them.

One other thing, she refuses hormone replacement treatment/therapy too, so that's out of the question.

Any advice re: the hot flushes and forgetfulness would be appreciated.

Thank you.

My mum suffers quite badly with it too

I will ask her tonight if she has any advice - I know she takes quite a few herbal remedies so will see what she says

I think primrose oil is meant to help with the side effects, but not 100% sure if that is right.

ok mum knows I've posted cos I've told her. She says she's already taking evening primrose oil and cod liver oil together.  She is also on anti-histamines for her allergy with a strange name and takes aspirin to help thin her blood.

She says she's open to suggestions especially anything herbal but not the wacky backy kind as that will send her more doolally than she already is!

Thanks.

I think there are things you should avoid that make the symptoms worse like high carbohydrates.  A multiviatmin and mineral is a good thing to take as vit B can help ease the symptoms and extra calcium is good after the age of 35 because as women our calcium levels start to drop off, if you take calcium with vit D it helps the body absorb it better.  Calcium can make you constipated though so worth watching out for that unwanted side affect. Vit C is meant to help with the hot flushes and also Clary Sage aromatherapy oil.  Pepermint tea is also meant to be good for hot flushes.  Flaxseed oil is also meant to be very good for low estrogen levels and doesn't taste too unpleasant, memory loss is linked with low estrogen levels, the memory is also one of those things you have to keep activated you can do this by doing crossword puzzles or reading, make sure you get enough rest too as that helps with memory, lack of sleep makes your memory worse.  I would be careful taking to many things over the counter with diabetes as you don't want to upset the blood sugar levels.  Blood sugar levels can also cause hot flushes.  Avoid drinking alcohol and coffee as these increase hot flushes.  Vitamin E can help with the hot flushes too but be careful taking too much as it also thins your blood and already being on aspirin you don't want to add too much blood thinning.  Interestingly women in Japan and other oriental countries don't suffer from the menopause symptoms we do in the west and it's thought to be because of their diet which is high in fish.

Thank you Sam.

I've printed this thread off for her.
