How many pregnancy scans are classed as normal in your area?  When I was expecting my first child, the only scan I had was a 20 week scan, just for checking the baby’s size etc.  By the time I had my 2nd child, I’d had 2 scans, as more than one scan was only an option if they suspected twins or there were problems.  Mine was due to problems….. I had 3 bleeds towards the end, with a lot of irregular pains.  By the time I had my 3rd, again I had only had 1 scan, but because I was a lady of leisure (resting at the hospital before I had my baby), and more importantly because I was a smoker, they decided to give me an extra scan while I was waiting!  However when I conceived Fred, I had a dating scan, a 20 week one, and because it was thought he may be breech I had yet another one towards the end.  And what was amazing to me this time was the fact that if you had the cash, you could pay for a 3d scan and basically see what he/she may look like.  By the time I had Winston, I had been given a scan at 8 weeks (which turned out to be my 13 weeks), another at 12 weeks (my 17), the normal one at half way, another one then at their 34 weeks (because he was breech), another at 37 because he was very small (measuring 29 weeks) which was wrong, he just didn’t want them to know the truth lol, and then my last one at 38 weeks(my 42) as they had to recheck the cord as the cord was pumping blood the wrong way! So all in all he had 5 scans not to mention the x-ray I was in the room for when he was just growing at 5-6 weeks old!  Although I now know it’s normal to have 2 scans, I was just curious how different it is across the country.

I had 5 scans with dd and four with ds, we had to have 5 with dd as they couldn't see her heart working propaly and we had 4 with ds because he wouldn't move his right arm, he did when grandad walked in the room, it was quite funny, like he was waving at my dad.

A scan at 12 weeks is the only routine scan they do at my local hospital

I ended up having 4 scans - 1 at 7 weeks (a dating scan & to check things were ok cause id been bleeding), the 12 week 1 then 1 at 8 days overdue because i was having a homebirth so they needed to check my waters & finally 1 while i was in labour at 10 days overdue, again to check my waters

Trying to think back now..

Taylor - 2 normal scans (12 and 20 weeks) and a extra one at 10 weeks due to bleeding

Sophie - 2 normal scans (12 and 20 weeks) plus 2 extra scans at 6 and 7 weeks, again due to bleeding

EC3 (aka Jamie Kate) - 2 normal scans (12 and 20 weeks) plus 2 extra ones, cant remember how many weeks, the first one was due to the mw at the hospital not being able to pick up the heart beat with the doppler and the second was to check the size as my mw was measuring me at being 4 weeks behind.

With Hayley I had one scan at around 20wks which was normal back then you didn't have a datins scan.

With Fran I had one scan but can't quite remember when that was I have a feeling it was earlier than 20wks at about 16wks.  I had bleeding with Fran but they didn't scan for bleeding back then.

With Ols I had quite a few, one at 7wks as I had a bleed.  then the 12wk scan.  I then returned a high risk of Downs so my dr scanned again at 17wks to put my mind at rest.  We then went to Bristol and had a scan at 19wks and then the normal anomaly scan at 20wks.  We had another scan at 37wks as they thought Ols was breach and they weren't wrong.  So 6 in total.

This time I have had a scan at 7wks 1day.  I am having 2 12wk scans one for Nuchal Fold and one for chorionicity.  Depending on the chorionicity will then decide if I am scanned every fortnight or monthly.

Where we live generally the rule is 2 scans one growth scan between 11 and 14 wks and one anomally scan between 19 and 21wks.

Its mad, my mum tells me that only exceptional cases had scans when she was pregnant with me!

I had a number of scans with Joshua, the first being the day I found out I was pregnant (17 weeks I think) and then one 3 days later as they werent expecting a baby in the first scan lol so I had to come back to antenatal clinic. I then had a scan 1 week later due to heavy bleeding, and again a week after that

I then had my normality scan at 20 weeks,  and I had another emergancy scan at 21 weeks as I was suspected of a placentral abrupsion, and 2 days after finding the partial abrupsion I had another scan to decide whether I was healing or if they were going to induce a miscarriage.

I had a scan at 28 weeks as I had a previous molar pregnancy so Joshua was high risk. I then had weekly scans from 30 weeks to 36 weeks, and twice weekly scans from 36 weeks to 39 weeks.

The later scans are fantasic you can see so clearly. I wanted photo's of his later scans, but as they were not routine scans I wasnt allowed any.

OMG thats lots of scans lol

Routine at fairfield where he was born is dating scan around 12 weeks and normaility scan around 20 weeks.
