Hi. Normally in the UK you're offered an ultrasound to date the pregnancy between 10 and 13 weeks. That said, if you've had a miscarriage, you can ask for an early one and its up to the doctor or midwife.

I had a miscarriage last year and when I fell pregnant again, my midwife asked if I wanted an early scan. I declined as I didn't want the worry if they couldn't see anything. When I miscarried, I started to bleed at 5 weeks and had a scan at 6 weeks, then 7, neither of which showed anything but at this stage, thats very normal.

I would suggest having a word with your doctor and explaining that you'd like to get an early scan because of what happened last time. The midwife did say to me that its best to wait until 8 weeks at least as by then, there is more chance of seeing something.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

In the UK where I am if you have had previous mc's then they will do a scan at 8 wks.  You are better off waiting until 8 wks for a scan because they will see the baby easily and also 6wks and 8wks are the 2 big developmental milestones when things can go wrong.  With my last pregnancy I had a scan at 7wks 3days and we saw identical twins and a third triplet that already looked like it hadn't made it, I mc'ed them all at just over 10 wks even though we had seen heartbeats and them moving.  If you can pursuade your doctor to get you a scan just after 8 wks that is the best thing to do.

In the UK as said by others it is usual for 2 scans - 1 at around 12 weeks and one at 20.  I agree with everyone else that if you can wait until 8 weeks that would be better as you are more likley to see the heartbeat etc.  I would ask your midwife/doctorfor an early scan as per the other advice here.

Good luck and try not to worry (obviously easier said that done!)  xx

Yeah see i go in this week and if I ask for an early ultrasound the earliest they could even get me in would be 2 to 3 weeks from now. Our ultrasound lady is soo busy that you cant get appointments right away unless something bad is happening/ So if he approves my early scan it still wouldnt be till 8 olr 9 weeks anyways. and thats fine with me I just want one before 13 weeks to make sure.
