I need help lol!

My MW has menioned that I am fine to have a home birth now as I am under "normal" care for the rest of this pregnancy (4 weeks lol)!.

I don't know what to do.

DD was born at Lincoln Maternity Unit after a 4 hour 30 mins labour 4 days overdue weighing 7lb 12 and I had just a 2nd degree tear.

This is a plus in my eyes, a short, relatively "easy" labour with gas and air. BUT what if something went wrong and we were at home? What would happen?

It's a 30 minute minimum drive to hospital if Rich is driving relatively fast and there is no traffic. During rush hour its a 50 minute drive.
Also what would we do with DD, the neighbours, who are good friends of ours have offered to care for Louise no matter what time they are needed, but I feel bad as I have never spent more than 8 hours away from her ........

Has anyone here had a home birth?

Hi hun

I've never had a home birth but i have known a few mw's and they are highly trained, if they forsee a problem they will call you a big white taxi with a disco on the roof who can get you there in half the time if not less..... (ambulance service to those who are sane).

Try not to worry too much, i'd take your neighbours up on the offer, dh can always pick her up later if complications arise, she'll get spoilt rotten by your neighbours and to be honest you won't have time to think about her a whole lot, as you be concentrating on relaxing in your pool, breathing etc. If your worried and you know your neighbours really well would it make you more comfortable if they came over to sit with dd at yours and then she'll have games etc and all her toys etc.

But try to relax and have fun.

I'm thinking of a home birth too, and in a similar position with the journey to hospital - the roads round here are appalling for traffic at the best of times - lots of lorries and tractors, and no-where to overtake. But Tsena's right - any sign of a problem you'd be straight in an ambulance and off to the hospital before you knew what was happening! Don't let that put you off. Hopefully everything will go to plan, and you won't need to worry about someone to look after Louise - you won't even have to leave the house.

xxx

I had a home birth with Jaimee.. and i wish i would have had one with the other 2.

The hospital was only a 5 min drive from my house.. but after the way i was treated when Sophie was born i refused to go back again.

the home birth was so much more relaxed..the mw's i had were excellent, and there was no running between rooms as they didnt have anypne else to keep an eye on..

I was also worried about "what if anything went wrong".. but the mw's now carry the emergency equipment they need if anything did go wrong.. i was also told, if they thought something was going to go wrong they would be on the phone to get an ambulance straight away.

I would definatly recomend a home birth over a hospital one..

I would've liked a home birth with Adam, but Sophie was a very hyped up toddler so I opted for hospital for the break more than anything. If I get pregnant again, I am thinking of either a home birth or a section.

Thanks for all your messages.

I have told the MW I don't want a home birth, but plan on staying at home for as long as possible whilst having contractions.  My MW lives in the next village, 2 mins drive away lol!

The neighbours are fantastic with DD, she loves them to bits and they have said they will happily take Louise round theirs or come round to ours no matter what the time is.

I am 36+4 weeks today and next seeing my MW in 2 weeks time arghhhh!

xx B xx

Awww hun, may i be nosey and ask what made you choose the hospital for the birth...? I never got the option so i just wondered what factors you weighted up to reach your decision..... I think apart from naming your child i think this is the next hardest decision to make.

I'm glad you've got the support of your neighbours... it's great that they dote on your dd.... must be nice to have that support there.

How's your spd doing? Are you managing to plod along?

Zany - plodding is about the right word lol!

I can't walk any distance at all.  I just end up with terrible shooting pains and have to stop.

I have chosen to go to hospital because we only live in a bungalow, and I don't want to scare DD in case I end up crying when in labour again lol.  She is very clingy to me.

Also a lot of people have been telling me about people who had home births and their babies needed resuscitating.  Plus almost everyone I speak to seems dead set against the idea of a home birth and have scared me.

I am going to stay at home as long as and see how I cope .......

Awww hunny sorry to hear the spd is giving you jip.

I don't blame you for going to hospital it's amazing when you say to someone oh i'm thinking of having a home birth or i'm going into hosptial, the majorty of all you hear is horror stories.... and wishes of good luck, hope all goes well etc.

The reason i had to have mine in hospital was because i didn't trust my mw's where i lived (didn't know anything about spd) and the hospital was in a different county! lol

So went for the option of where there was more chance of someone knowing something about spd.

You never know if you stay put long enough and the labours quick you might end up with the home birth after all.....

Just go with how your feeling hun, take it slow you and your body are in control.... do make sure you don't use striups etc when in labour or if you need sticthes. If you need to chat pm me hun. x

Take care x

I have warned DH that he may have to deliver this baby lol!
