With all of my pregnancies, I was offered a varying amount of scans, however finding the gender was only available in my last 2.  I was wondering how different parts of the country are with this.  I live in North Wales, and with my first pregnancy, I was only offered the 20 week scan.  With my 2nd I had the 20 week scan, but due to bleeding in the latter month (only spotting), I had a further 3 scans, at one of these the sonographer actually said oh you’re having a boy.  With my daughter, I had my 20 weeks scan, but also had one at almost full term.  The reasoning was because I had to spend the last 2 weeks in the hospital as access to the house in an emergency was inaccessible, and because I was a smoker, the chances of having a small baby was high.  With my last 2 pregnancies, I was given a dating scan, then the usual one at 20 weeks (approx.) to check all the measurements and this is when I found out the gender for them.  I know the gender scan is usually after 20 weeks due to the fact that boys and girls develop exactly the same until a certain stage.  I don’t know whether some hospitals will actually give you a scan specifically to find out the gender, when I asked, I was told it wasn’t possible up here.

Hi hun

When i had my boys it was never offered..... in lincolnshire where i had my first i wasn't offered it.... and i didn't want to know as he was my first.

My second i wanted to know to help prepare my first son.... i was allowed to ask and it was disclossed but in peterborough where i gave birth and my final scans where offered due to complications i wasn't allowed to ask..... as it's hospital policy not to disclose.

But i've never heard of anyone being offered a scan to find out the sex only.

When I had the girls ( antenatal care Dunfermline, Fife) there were signs everything telling you not to ask the sex as they wouldn't tell you. I had scans with them at around 12 weeks, and then around 19 weeks.

I also had my antenatal care for Cameron at Dunfermline, though by then you could ask the sex, so I did. I had scans at the same stages.

Am in Norfolk now, and I had a dating scan with this baby - I was exactly 9 weeks. I hoped I'd get another around 12 weeks but my next is between 20 and 22 weeks. I forgot to ask while I was there if they would tell me the sex at the next one, but asked another mum that I know, and she said they tell you if they can see. I really want to know this time - especially since Cameron is determined that it's a baby brother. I want to be able to prepared him if it's a girl lol! I've decided this time to have a 4D scan around 32 weeks, so hopefully if I haven't found out at 20 weeks, I should find out then.

xxx

I had all my kids down in the Borders. The hospital that they scan you at there, do not tell you the sex with your first baby.

Any babies you have after that you are offered the choice but they will say what they think and then show you the genital area to see if you agree.

We never found out the sex of any of mine, and didnt even enquire about it as we both wanted the suprise.. but for a strange reason we had to know with Mia, and they told us at the 20 week scan.

There is a big difference in policies up and down the country as to how many scans you get and wether or not they disclose the sex to you.
I personally think, if you want to know.. you should be told to the best of their abillitys what they think your having.

I had a scan at Bolton at 12 weeks, and another at 20 weeks. I didn't find out the sex, although I think we could've. I had another 2 scans at about 33 weeks as Ben was breech. These were at Stafford hospital. I'm not sure if they tell you there. I know round here now that Peterborough hospital won't tell you, but I think Leicester will. Some hospitals say its because of the large Asian population in the area thyat they won't tell, but I don't know how true that is!

I had routine scans at 12 and 20 weeks with DD, although I also had an extra scan at 7+ due to spotting and another at 18+5 because they got my dates wrong lol.

They couldn't tell us with DD, but this time they told us at our 20 week scan, the 30 week and also the 34 week scan lol!  He is most definitely a boy (apparently lol).

They will teell you here in Lincoln if they can but they do tell you it's not 100%!

As you know i only have the 2 and they are twins.

I was told i could find out at my 20 wk scan if i wanted to find out! We didn't want to know. When i was at an emergency scan because i fell over they asked "so you don't want to know what your having" errrr no thats what we said. But it was obvious she knew what we was having.

We still stuck by our decision and we didn't find out but we could have. xxx
