Hi

Well where to start really.  I am pregnant and I am due 31st January 2009.  I had a scan at 8 +6 that showed one baby and one heartbeat so that was a good sign.  I had another scan today which shows I am 12 +4 so bang on target.  The babies crown to rump length is normal, the babies ear to ear measurement is normal, the babies femur length is normal.  However the nuchal fold area is abnormal measuring 5mm.  The sonographer tried to speak to the main hospital and to the local hospital to get someone to come and speak to us and tell us our options but no one was available.  Fortunately I have a consultants appointment on Friday booked already.

I am slightly annoyed in some ways as we had already decided that we would not have the triple test or pay for a nuchal fold scan.  We won't have a cvs or an amnio.  We had a lot of worry with Ollie after the triple test and we didn't want to go through all that again.  I expect we will be sent to Bristol fetal medicine hospital for a more detailed scan and see if there are any other key markers the same as we were with Ollie.  Having a baby with a chromosome disorder does not bother us in the fact we still want and will still love our baby but it's scarey not knowing what other health complications our baby could have in the future and what we will all have to go through.Login or Register to view images

Sam I am over the moon for you - I am so glad it is all going so well.

It must be worrying that the scan showed a possible problem, but I hope a further scan will help put your minds at ease.

Congratulations Sam and Keith. Here's to a heathy, happy 5/6 more months.

Wow, firstly hun, huge congratulations...it's about time you had something good happen.  I'm really sorry about the other problems though, hopefully you'll learn more in the near future so you can go on and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Firstly CONGRATULATIONS

I have to admit I had guessed from A) the 10 things about you and you said 'secrets' and B) I have been following your mood indicaters and they were nauseous, tired, excited, hopeful etc...so I could be completly off target but I feel like detective Sunny on the New York Crime Unit! (alternatively I could have to much time on my hands)

Regarding Chromosonal mutations...I know from expereince this could mean ANYTHING. I have a friend who has a son with a chromosonal mutation and he is completly 'normal' in fact they only found out as a private doctor was over zealous with tests. In his case he was told to speak to a chromosonal specialist when he meets a partner and wants to have children.  What I am trying to say is that there are so many chromosones and yes there could be a mutation BUT in  alot of cases this DOES not affect any aspects of the individual.

Take a really deep breath, take comfort that there are no further 'soft markers' yes it feels scary ( I had a 1 in 28 chance of Downs with my second) BUT it really could be nothing or something very minor

and most impotantly

YOU ARE PREGNANT...YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

congratulations to you both, you really deserve this good news,i know you must be allover the place at the min and have many worries and everyone says it but pls try not to let it eat away at you both too much,as you said, you have made the decision to have this baby and not have any of the tests,so focus on that, you will be having a baby and you both will love and cherish it unconditionally, you dont deserve any more heartache so i really am hoping everything turns out to be okay for you both. best of luck and congrats again xxx

I remember all the worries with Ollie's pregnancy and feel awful you've been dealt this blow again with this pregnancy.  You'll get through it as you're made of stong stuff. It is lovely and amazing to see your wee bubba- I'm getting wee boy vibes.
