Harrison is 5 and hasnt grasped how to tie his shoe laces.

Up until now he has worn velcro shoes, but his new school shoes are laces.

His teacher has made it clear they have to tie their own laces and because Harry cant his little friend at school helps him.

I've tried to teach him but he just cant master it. How old was your lo when they could tie laces?

Any tips?

Kev's son Alistair was 11 by the time he could tie his shoelaces properly!!  Kev sat him down and showed him and showed him until he could do it!  Not much help but thats how it happened!

Ethan is 7 and still cannot do it at all. He has practiced and practiced, but it really is a huge feat of manual dexterity to be able to achieve, and I know that only a couple of the other children in his class can do it (and one of them had to learn as he's got size 4 feet! At age 7!) I'm amazed that age 5 they won't help them. I don't know what actual policy is, but I go in to Noah's class (he's just 5) every week on the day when they have PE and all the grown ups are forever doing up laces or rethreading velcro straps, or unfolding the backs of shoes, etc...

My 7 yo dd can tie her laces, but my 8 yo ds cant yet still either!
He tries very hard and you can see the amount of concentration he has doing it, and is nearly there.
Its the whole pulling the bow back through the loop that gets him!

I always give them one of my dh's boots to practise on as the laces are longer than childrens shoes to make it easier to tie up and less fidly.

It's an absolute pet hate of mine, even more so at the moment as I'm the size of a hippo with these twins!  I teach 6/7 yr olds and many of them still can't properly tie laces.  Even the ones who can sometimes have problems with laces that easily slip and become untied again.  And the laces themselves can be a problem as kids can trip over them during the day!  In the day I just don't have the time to tie-up loads of laces!  Our children change into soft gym shoes when they come into the building and back into their outdoor shoes for break and lunch time, so they change shoes about 6 times a day.  I'd urge you to get him velcro shoes until he can do his own- what will he do if his wee pal is off school?  Sorry to moan, it's just one of those things that make teachers scream!

(Don't start me about wearing school ties on PE days.....)
