One of the symptoms of PCOS is insulin resisitance. After having my tests on Friday, the endocrinolgy nurse asked me if I would be interested taking part in some medical research into improving insulin resistance with diet and exercise. I was a bit unsure at first, but took the information away. I was drawn to it as a new method of weight loss. My insulin resistance is currently treated with Metformin, these trials believe medication is not always necessary. Although I have manage to maintain my weight whilst taking the Metformin, weight loss has been very slow, and fluctuating. As well as taking this, I was also following a low GI diet.

This medical research wants me to follow a low carbohydrate diet, with intense interval training. I will also under go a glucose tolerance test, DXA scan (assess bone, fat and muscle mass) and a exercise stress test. Assuming the ECG is normal, the study starts.

I have emailedsome queries over to the university, and they have been very helpful and informative in their replies. I have agreed to take part, and they have welcomed me on board (apparently Im perfect for their 'most wanted' list lol). I am awaiting another email, not sure if I am atteding in the morning, or Saturday. Hopefully I will loose the guaranteed 1 kilo each week, and in no time at all I'll be feeling much better and looking great too!

Which university is it that is carrying out the study?  Sounds interesting.

Wow- that sounds to good to be true!  I'd love to have a personal diet and fitness programme for free.  It was great there was someone at the uni over the weekend to get back to you so soon too, that means no waiting about.  Share the plan with us all if it's good!

I was a bit shocked to hear over the weekend lol Im all set to go tomorrow. Had a pasta dinner, as asked by the proffessor, and Im now fasting! I have to be at the university for 8.30am. Here's hoping the plan works, hopefully I'll learn something that I can then continue after the study - assuming it works for me! Might have to buy an exercise bike though if it does so I can maintain the interval training lol

It was ok! I had to have my O2 output measured for 10 minutes in a warm relaxed state. Then I had to have a fasting blood test taken. Once that was done, I was given a glucose drink (ewww lol) and then every 30 minutes had another blood test taken. They did try putting a canula (sp?) in but because of the tests last week it apparently wasnt recovered enough, and they couldnt get even one sample from my other arm. I ended up having to have a butterfly injection for each test. I have 6 little holes all in a line on my arm pmsl He said that it should have recovered fro next time I need those tests (end of the study) and should be just one needed for all tests lol

Im back on Wednesday now for the exercise stress test and the DXA scan. I also have to have a normal diet this week, but make an accurate food diary Then next week I will start the recommended diet. They try to work it on an individual basis, avoiding foods that you dont like and more of the ones you do (where possible). Its apparently design for a complete lifestyle change, not a quick fix diet.
