hi,

it's little ol' me again, with another question.

i have been having huge problems with bleeding after having katie and after treatment with medication i am still having problems. i have been told the next line of treatment is the mirena coil. for those of you who don't know this is a coil that is fitted and has a implant with it around it. this contains progesterone. i am due to go to the gynae consultant on 29th and i have got myself worked up over this. i have been having hassle from work and i suddenley had a eureka moment about the coil. surely if i put this in my body i will no doubt render myself immobile as isn't it progesterone that knacks us in the first place? i know when i have my period i am really in a state and incapacitated. please, if anyone out there can help me urgewntly or google on my behalf i'll be forever indebted.

i'll explain my cheeky request. i am still doing my brothers inquest, which takes me from home for most of the week, and i am without internet access, as i am in trowbridge! i have found the computer shop offer the access, but i am paying for it!!! i have such limited time out of court and limited funds and invariably i am having to prioritise my access time to things i need to research for the court case. i am having hassle from work, and i know my girls and dh will not take kindly to me going on computer when i am home for less than 48 hrs!

i am so so so stressed at the mo, not helped with hormones (PMT!).

PLEASE HELP ME...AS I AM GOING THROUGH HELL RIGHT NOW.

I had the merina coil - it was put it around 4 to 5 months after Edward was born. I got on ok with it but in trying to discover why my SPD had returned or got worse I had it removed. As it happens now I believe it had little or no effect on my SPD. My SPD started returning slowky from when Eds was 3and half to for months and it didnt get significantly worse when I had it put in, nor did I notice an improvement when I had it removed.

I will say be very careful who puts it and in and that they are very experienced at doing it and know your problems so your legs are open for the least amount of time. My GP was wonderful as although her surgery doesnt normally do the coil she got special permission to do me as she had done loads and understood my limitations.

I am considering having mine put back in as my PMT, period pains and general period symptoms were better with it. I havent found another method which benefits me.

My problem is like yours, putting extra hormones into my body scares me as the SPD might be triggered. I dont think enough, if any, research has been done to give us any better information.

Some research I have done has shown the link between hormones and SPD is actually not true. Certainly the link is actually with relaxin in pregnancy initially. The cause of SPD after pregnancy is more to do with lax ligaments and hypermobility. Progesterone is in the IUS device but in doses 1/7th strenght that are in the pill and many other contraceptive devices - have you used anything else?

I hope some of this has helped - if you are concerned then talk your concerns through with your consultant and see what they say.

Good luck

Hi hun

I'm afraid to say it but sorry i'm not going to be much use this time. I have never had a coil fitted, couldn't bear the thought of getting in the postion required. I have the implanon implant instead but i have googled a bit..... lol

What i have found out is it's hormone called relaxin that's been linked to being a key player in spd flare ups...and is the one that causes ligements etc to loosen for pregnancy.

The Mirena coil uses (but check with your doc) the hormone called Levonorgestrel. This can get absorbed into your body in 2 ways and depending on the method your body chooses for absorption depends on if it can display progesterone type symptoms..... this type of hormone is also found in some forms of contraceptive pills.

I think you need to personally consider what you've been on and what you've trief. If they can't put you at ease about the risks etc then you have to make an informed choice.... try not to worry just go armed with a long list of questions hun.

Hope your brother's inquest is going as well as can be expected and that you are holding up ok. Good luck hun and hugs x
