hi ladies,

how are you all. my lo is 12 wks now and everything has changed. all he does is cry and the things that used to make him smile he doesnt like anymore. he doesnt take his feeds like he used to he will take a couple of ozs when he wants so hes having about 9 bottles eveyday. he still sleeps through the night but because he crys for most of the day and feeds all the time i feel like crying myself im sure its something ive done wrong. my mum thinks he has gone of his milk so she told me to try him on a bit of baby rice to see if it will fill him up a bit, but when i asked my hv about it she said i cant but him on baby rice hes to young and tells me just to carry on with what im doing. but if i do that i swear i will be in the looney bin in a few weeks. can any of you please give me some advise on how me and lo can get through this.

thanks shell + blaine.

Hi Shell, I am sure you have done absolutely nothing what so ever wrong.  So don't blame yourself for the way little Blaine is behaving at the moment.

How often are you trying to feed him his bottle?  Try and make him wait for the 4hrs between feeds if you can, if he is wanting something inbetween the 4hrs offer him some cool boiled water.  In the weather we are having at the moment it's quite normal for babies to be grumpy and demand more feeds because they are hot and thirsty.  They can't control their body temperature the same as we can and don't understand.

What your Mum says is kind of right and wrong.  When I had my 2 dd's 16 and 12yrs ago at 12wks old we would start them on baby rice.  New research suggests that babies don't now need solids until they are 17wks old.  But it is your decision to make how you feed your baby.  The hv won't and can't help you wean until Blaine is 17wks old because of NHS guidelines.

Having said all that if Blaine has only very recently become cranky and you don't think it's the heat then it might be a good idea to get him a quick check up at the doctors just to make sure he is well in general and he is just being a pickle and not poorly.

There are so many things that it could be, he could be teething, has he had his injections recently?

What is important is that you don't blame yourself and you get plenty of rest.  It is good he is sleeping threw the night.  Just as an aside I tried Ollie on baby rice yesterday (gasp of shock and horror goes up) to see if it would help him sleep at night at he wakes every 3hrs in the night.  It made absolutely no difference what so ever, so magic baby rice doesn't solve all the problems.

You know what your lo needs and what you need.  Try not to get depressed about it and if you think you are, make sure you speak to someone as pnd isn't nice.

Sending you a big hug

looks like mumsam has said it all for me hun, i really hope he settles soon for you again, dummies are great, i gave aimee one when she decided to feed all the time, then realised she just wanted something to suck on and it relaxed her.

Well done Shell told you it wasn't anything you were doing.  I wish Ollie would take a dummy sometimes as he tends to use me as a dummy.  In the last week he has found his thumb which is a God send he goes to bed much easier and will sit for longer periods of time quite happily sucking his thumb.

Glad you and Blaine are happier

Glad things settled down for you, Rianna is a pickle at the moment too, she cant seem to decide what she wants in this weather, and she wont take a dummy anymore so no luck there, still sure she will get settled again in a day or 2. Keep up the good work and good luck hun

hello i am probably a bit late, but did you know that babies have a growth spurt at around 12 weeks?? they feed almost constantly, they sleep all day, or not at all and are generally grumpy. it is normal. it usually settles down within a week.

just for future information, there are growth spurts at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 22 weeks. they only last for a week or 2 weeks at absolute maximum. they are not necessarily indicators to wean, especially if the baby is breastfed.

glad you got things sorted out though!

luv sarah + ashton
