just wondered if anyone else has any experience of this?

Ellie was 3 in April and has all of a sudden in the past week started to stutter - well not sure stutter is the right word actually, it's just that she really struggles to get some words out - it seems to happen more when she's excited or tired..it's like her brain is going faster than her mouth can go...

anyone else?  should I be worried?  her speech has always been about average I think; she pronounces some letters wrong but she seems to have a big vocabulary and does talk quite a lot at home but not so much in unfamiliar company...

thanks!

This is the reason my ds (4) was sent to speech theraphy, he gets so excited he gets his words mixed up and back to front, if you know him you understand him but for new peolple its quite difficult.

The speech therapist said it will resolve itself as he gets older and not so excitable about everything.

Im sure its just thats she over excited like you said but if your worried have a word with your HV. My dd is a right chatterbox at home but put her in a unfamilar situation and she goes mute, it quite nice actually gives my ears a rest xxx

Yup I have a 3 year old stutterer as well! the funny thing it is sooo intermittent eg he has not stuttered one bit for the last 3 days but it could appear at any point.

I think you it the nail on the head when you siad the brain is moving to fast for her mouth. Tiredness is also a cause for it.

I also find if he feels he can't be heard he starts stuttering as often he starts talking to get attention...When he gets attention his brain is wherriing, so he doesn't know what he was going to say so he stutters to maintain attention until he has worked out what he is saying. I often just bend down make eye contact, touch his arm gently and say slowly. i find then he knows he has my attention and he can stop re gather thoughts and start again. I make a point of not standing up until he finishes what he is saying.

good Luck

I'm the same!

omg she is driving me MAD with it, she's been doing it all day....I don't understand where it's come from all of a sudden?!!

we've tried not drawing attention to it, in fact we've not said anything to her except today when she was saying "mary pop pop pop pop pop poppins" I had to get down to her level and tell her just to say it slowly...

thanks for the replies, nice to know I'm not alone but aarrrggggghhhhhhhhhhhh, how annoying is it?!
