i have been telling my 1 yr old (NO) for a few months now when she does something i don't want her to... like picking up ornemants or touching buttons on the tv etc. i also put a mad looking face on lol.

however this seems to have little affect, she will often just carry on with what she's doing after turning to look at me. i often can't physically move her away from what she is doing as i have a 1 month old.

what does everyone else do when there lo is doing something they shouldn't? apart for moving as many things as you can out of reach.

maybe she doesn't yet understand what the word no means but if im feeding her she will shake her head and say no when she doesn't wnat anymore. or if someone moves her away from grabbing something she will also say no.

Fred is the same!  I've already started tapping his hand, and you'd think from the volume of him that I had smashed him with something!  They are testing the boundaries, I've found distracting him works better and keeps him happier, not sure how I'm gonna manage now that I've got another due!  But Fred deliberately does it no matter how many times he's been told otherwise!  I'm afraid I have no useful suggestions, it's one of those things we learn through trial and error, especially as all one year olds do it!

My dd is 9 months old and laughs when told no, my ds never touched anything he wasn't meant to, so this is all new to me too, she grabs the fruit bowl off the table and takes everything she can reach, there is only so much you can move, i guess it is a matter of persistance in the word 'NO'

When ever I tell Ollie NO he has selective hearing and ignores me but when Keith says NO he stops instantly.  With the girls I thought this was because their Dad was at work and so they listened to him more when he was at home.  I am glad to say that theory is totally debunked now as I am at work full time and Keith at home.  I think it's the deepness of the voice and how many times you say it before expecting a responce.  Keith always says NO really firmly and loudly if Ols is about to do something like touch a plug socket and then as soon as Ols turns round he says he is a good boy and to come away which he does.  I on the other hand probably say no more frequently in a higher pitched voice and forget the positive praise when he actually does what he is told....

Ahhh thats how ds2 does it!  I never looked at it like that before Sam, it winds me up others can say no, and I get the worst response!  I'll have to work this one out before George comes along, at least that way I'll do it right once out of 5! lol

Edward has selective hearing too and on 2 occasions when he has really pushed me, ie laughed at me and constently ignored me I have smacked his bum and put him in the conservatory then stood with my back to him and ignored him for 1 minute. Then asked for an apology (which is normally a kiss). I dont like resorting to this as it really upsets him and I save it for very naughty/dangorous things.

I agree with Vix that at this age distraction often works much better... but isnt easy with a tiny baby to contend with too.

Ellie does this too!  She just turns and looks at me and then carries straight on!!  The one thing that really annoys me is when I'm holding her, she'll grab at my face really hard and ignore me when I say no - I put her down saying NO very loudly and then ignore her for about 30 secs...it's not just me she ignores tho so I don't feel too bad lol

If ellen is doing something naughty i ignore her and she stops.  When she claws my face though she gets put in her cot for a minute and then she gives me a kiss when i get her out.
