Well, with ds1 starting college I decided he ought to be taught how to feed himself! He will most probably be staying during the week at moms or mils and coming home on the weekends and holidays! So on Wednesday (when my family credit came in) I gave him £30 to budget with! He has managed to get himself a good shop, but I am also making him use his own things etc. and not ours. Sounds harsh but it's the one vital skill I was never taught, so wanted him to learn. He came out of Tesco with his bags, (and 28 tesco points for me) and it looked like he had done well! It's only Saturday and he's still got plenty of food left. I can't tell you all how chuffed I am with him, and although we've been telling him how bad credit cards are etc, he is sure in his own minds that if he can't afford it's better to go without! lol He realised that when he saw how much a game for the computer (or ps2) was, he could get alot more food he was able to buy for the same price! He has used his wages from his job to get himself a couple of extra things, however, he has also found out that coke is not as nice when that is all you have, and why I call it a luxury, he has also realised tht if he buys eggs, flour etc he can make his own cakes, and no one else is allowed to eat them! He said to me, that he loves doing this and even when he does go to stay at whoever's house in the autumn, can he still buy his own food! Bless him it really looks like he will adjust better than I thought. It also gives him that little bit of independence, now, so he knows what is important and what isn't. We were given a little fridge which I have said he can have, so when I find anywhere to put it we will switch it on and he will be able to have his own little Fridge as well!

Thats why I wanted ds1 to learn! I wish I'd left home with half the knowledge of money that he will have. I have had to learn my lesson with credit cards the hard way, and I really don't want the older ones (or the younger ones really) having to do the same. I've alraeady made them understand that they have to work for cash, hence making them do household chores for pocket money. And if they want something big they have got to save for it. I have also advised him that when he gets paid each week from his summer job, it might well be advisable to start buyng himself something for his bottom draw! I know it's an old fashioned thing and usually the woman that did it, butin this day and age, it would be well either male or female. Just small things like a pan, salt cellars,or even things like an iron and ironing board! It teaches them a valuable lesson, and also helps them respect things more! He's asked if I can take him to Lidl next week to see how much extras he may be able to buy himself!
Bless him he went down to the village earlier in this nasty rain on his bike! He got drenched, but he has managed to buy himself some eggs and stuff with this week's wages so he can make himself some cakes!

Would you like to send him up here to teach my dd. She can't even boil an egg. Has no interest in learning things like this. Don't know how she will survive if she goes to uni in a couple of years.
